Downtown Wonju or Jijeong?
Both bases work for Wonju, and they suit different trips. Downtown puts you by Gangwon Gamyeong and the markets of Jungangsijang-gil, with the bus terminals and the city tour bus; Jijeong-myeon puts you at Ganhyeon, by Sogeumsan's bridges over the river, with Museum SAN a bus ride away. Here is how to choose.
The verdict
For a first visit, a trip without a car, the markets or Chiaksan, choose downtown: Gangwon Gamyeong has commentators every day, the Jungang Citizens Traditional Market trades until 21:00 by the city's hours, buses from Seoul and Incheon Airport arrive in Wonju, and local buses run from the Intercity Bus Terminal towards Guryongsa. For Sogeumsan at its 09:00 opening on the city's hours, Museum SAN or a night by the river, choose Jijeong-myeon: Wonju City lists lodgings and pensions at Ganhyeon, and the tour bus links the bridges to the museum. Two nights? Take one of each.

Questions visitors ask
Is downtown Wonju or Jijeong better without a car?
Downtown. The city tour bus calls at Wonju Bus Terminal and Gangwon Gamyeong, local buses run from the Intercity Bus Terminal towards Guryongsa, and taxis cover the rest. Jijeong works without a car only on the tour bus, which does not run on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal or Chuseok, by the city's timetable dated February 2026.
Which base is better for Sogeumsan and Museum SAN?
Jijeong-myeon. You wake up at Ganhyeon for the 09:00 opening on the city's hours, and the Tourist Attraction course leaves Sogeumsan Mountain at 12:50 and 14:20 for Museum SAN, timetabled at 13:13 and 14:43. From downtown, the first City Tour Course leaves Wonju Station at 9:20 and reaches Gangwon Gamyeong on its way back.
Can I do both in one trip?
Yes, with two nights: one at Ganhyeon for Sogeumsan in the morning and Museum SAN in the afternoon, then one downtown for Gangwon Gamyeong, the markets and an early bus to Chiaksan. The city tour bus links them, calling at Gangwon Gamyeong at 11:35, 12:55, 17:55 and 19:15 on its way back from Sogeumsan.
