Sokcho Beach or Seorak-dong?

Both are good bases in Sokcho, and they suit different trips. Sokcho Beach puts you by the sea, the seafood market and both bus terminals; Seorak-dong puts you at the Sogongwon entrance to Seoraksan, with Sinheungsa, the cable car and the trails on your doorstep. Here is how to choose.

The verdict

For a first visit, a trip by bus or a holiday by the sea, choose Sokcho Beach: the beach is about 5 minutes on foot from the express terminal (KTO, 2025), the Tourist & Fishery Market about 5 minutes from the intercity terminal (KTO, 2023), and Sokcho Eye, Yeonggeumjeong, Dongmyeong Port and the gaetbae to Abai Village fill the evenings. For Seoraksan, choose Seorak-dong: Sogongwon is KTO's starting point for the Ulsanbawi and Daecheongbong trails, and entry opens at 03:00 in summer and 04:00 in winter. Two nights? Take one of each, and put the Seorak-dong night before your big hike.

Questions visitors ask

Is Sokcho Beach or Seorak-dong better without a car?

Sokcho Beach. The beach is about 5 minutes on foot from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal (KTO, 2025), where KTO's 2021 timetable has the Seoul buses arriving, and the market about 5 minutes from the intercity terminal (KTO, 2023). Seoraksan is a day trip from there on city bus 7 or 7-1 to the Sogongwon stop (KTO, 2024).

Which is better for hiking Seoraksan?

Seorak-dong. The Sogongwon entrance is KTO's starting point for the Ulsanbawi and Daecheongbong trails, and KTO lists entry hours of 03:00–14:00 in summer and 04:00–12:00 in winter. With the Daecheongbong trail at 16 km and 10 hours (KTO, 2024), a night at the gate gives you the early start.

Can I do Seoraksan as a day trip from Sokcho Beach?

Yes, for the shorter walks. Take bus 7 or 7-1 from the intercity terminal to the Sogongwon stop (KTO, 2024) for Ulsanbawi, about two hours each way by KTO's 2025 figure, Biryong Falls, about an hour each way, or the cable car to Gwongeumseong, about 10 minutes up. Save the Daecheongbong crossing for a night in Seorak-dong.
