Downtown Wonju
원주 시내
Wonju's old centre: the Joseon governor's office, three markets and the city tour bus.

The short answer
Stay downtown for your first night in Wonju. The old centre runs along Jungangsijang-gil, where Wonju City puts Jungang Market in the centre of the downtown commercial district and says that, with Jayu Market, the Jungang Citizens Traditional Market and the Street of Culture, it forms the central commercial area of the city. KTO says Jungang Market was selected as a cultural tourism market in 2015, with an art market on its second floor. At 85 Wonil-ro stands Gangwon Gamyeong, the office of the governor of Gangwon-do Province in the Joseon era and Historic Site No. 439, its gate, Pojeongnu, and main office, Seonhwadang, preserved in good condition.
Downtown is also where the city tour bus ties Wonju together. The city's tour-bus timetable dated February 2026 calls at Wonju Bus Terminal and Gangwon Gamyeong on a loop that runs out to Sogeumsan and Museum SAN in Jijeong-myeon. Wonju Station, with trains from Cheongnyangni listed from 06:40 to 23:15 on the city's transport page, is about 15 minutes by road from the Gamyeong, by the tour-bus timetable.
