Hwangnidan-gil or Bomun Lake?
Gyeongju's two main bases sit about 10 km apart. The old town around Hwangnidan-gil and Daereungwon has the royal tombs, Cheomseongdae and Wolji Pond on foot; Bomun Lake has the lakeside resort, Gyeongju World and direct buses from the KTX station.
The verdict
For a first visit, for night views and for anyone arriving by express or airport bus, choose the old town: Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyerim and Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond form one walking course, the sights stay open until 22:00, and the bus terminals are downtown. For families, cherry-blossom season and arrivals by KTX, choose Bomun: routes 700 and 710 run straight from Gyeongju Station (KTX, formerly Singyeongju), Gyeongju World is on Bomun-ro, and the lake path is barrier-free. The old town wins the evenings; Bomun wins the space.
