German Village or Sangju?

Both make a fine Namhae base, and they suit very different trips. German Village gives you a guesthouse night inside the story of Korea's miners and nurses, and a rural bus reaches it; Sangju gives you silver sand and the Boriam sunrise, and wants a car. Here is how to choose.

The verdict

For a night with a story, a car-free trip or Oktoberfest, choose German Village: villagers run guesthouses, the Namhae–Mijo rural bus reaches the Mulgeon Village stop in about an hour by VisitKorea's 2021 guide, and the Exhibition Hall, the windbreak forest and Treasure Island Observatory are among its nearby sights. For the Boriam sunrise, a summer beach or a drive to Mijo Port, the Seolli Skywalk and Daraengi, choose Sangju: Boriam opens at 03:30 on Geumsan, behind a 2 km white-sand beach in the same township. Two nights? Take German Village first, then Sangju; VisitKorea's coastal course links them in about 33 km.

Questions visitors ask

Is German Village or Sangju better without a car?

German Village. The Namhae–Mijo rural bus runs from Namhae Public Bus Terminal to the Mulgeon Village stop, about an hour by VisitKorea's 2021 guide, and the village is 250 m on foot from the stop. Sangju is a base for drivers: it lies about 22 km south of Namhae-eup, and Boriam is reached by a mountain road to the Bokgok car parks.

How far apart are German Village and Sangju?

VisitKorea's south-coast course, from Boriam via Sangju Beach and Treasure Island Observatory to German Village, covers about 33 km. With a hire car, a night in each works well: German Village for its evening and the Exhibition Hall, then Sangju for the Boriam sunrise the next morning.

Which is better for the Boriam sunrise?

Sangju. Boriam and the beach are both in Sangju-myeon, Boriam opens daily at 03:30, and VisitKorea recommends staying a night to see the sunrise from Geumsan. Drive to the Bokgok car parks; from the ticket office it is about 15 minutes on foot to the hermitage.
