Haenggung-dong or Suwon Station?

Suwon has two bases, and the choice comes down to nights or trains. Haenggung-dong puts you inside the walls of Hwaseong Fortress, by the Haenggung and Hwaseomun-ro's cafés; Suwon Station puts you on Line 1 and the Suin-Bundang Line, with buses to the fortress and the Korean Folk Village. Here is how to choose.

The verdict

For a first visit, night walks and the palace, choose Haenggung-dong: VisitKorea lists the fortress as open 24 hours, Hwahongmun and Banghwasuryujeong are the city's night views, and the Haenggung opens on Friday to Sunday evenings until 1 November 2026. For early trains, a short stopover or a day at the Korean Folk Village, choose Suwon Station: Line 1 and the Suin-Bundang Line stop there, buses from Exits 9 and 7 reach the Haenggung in about 15 minutes by VisitKorea's May 2024 figure, and buses 37 and 10-5 leave Exit 4 for the Folk Village. Two nights? Take one of each.

Questions visitors ask

Is Haenggung-dong or Suwon Station better for night views?

Haenggung-dong. VisitKorea lists Hwaseong Fortress as open 24 hours, all year, and Suwon City says night viewing is possible, with no closing days. Hwahongmun is lit after dark, and Gyeonggi Province's 2013 page says local residents regard Banghwasuryujeong as the city's No.1 nightscape. From Suwon Station, the walls are a bus ride of about 15 minutes, by VisitKorea's May 2024 figure.

Which is better for the Korean Folk Village?

Suwon Station. The Folk Village's own site sends visitors from Exit 4 on bus 37 or 10-5, and gives Sanggal Station on the Suin-Bundang Line, Exit 3, with the same buses, as its nearest station. From Haenggung-dong, ride back to Suwon Station first.

Can I stay in Haenggung-dong and still travel by train?

Yes. Suwon Station, on Line 1 and the Suin-Bundang Line, is about 15 minutes away by bus. From Exit 9, buses run from the Maesan Market stop to Paldal-gu Office, Hwaseong Haenggung, and from Exit 7 to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop, by the Suwon Museum of Art's directions. Allow for that ride before an early train.
