The short answer

Stay in Jumunjin for the port, the fish and the northern beaches. Gangneung City calls Jumunjin Port a major east-coast port with about 350 fishing boats, where squid, Korean sandlance and pollack are the common catches and fresh raw fish is sold straight from the boats. Jumunjin Fish Market, next to the port, was founded in 1936, VisitKorea says. Jumunjin Beach, in what VisitKorea calls the northernmost part of Gangneung, has shallow water good for families, a dense pine forest, and a campsite and forest fitness park nearby.

Fans come for two photo spots. The BTS Stop at Hyangho-ri, a beachside bus stop featured in a BTS album booklet photo, is a photo spot near Hyangho and Jumunjin beaches, Gangneung City says, and the city's 2023 webzine notes that the Jumunjin Sand Protection Dam, a filming location from the drama Goblin, still shows its drama-era scenery. This is a seafood-and-beach stay: come by car or plan on taxis from Gangneung Station.

Best for

  • Seafood and an early port morning
  • Families on a shallow, pine-backed beach
  • Camping by the sea
  • BTS and Goblin photo spots

Think twice if

  • Travelling without a car
  • Daily trips to Gyeongpo and downtown
  • Danoje week and downtown festivals
