Gyeongpo & Anmok
경포·안목
Gangneung's beach and lake, Yulgok's birthplace, Chodang tofu and Anmok's coffee street.

The short answer
Stay in Gyeongpo for Gangneung's sea and its Joseon heritage in one place. VisitKorea describes Gyeongpo Beach as a sand bank formed between Gyeongpoho Lake and the ocean, with shallow water and a pine forest alongside, and Gangneung City's creative-city site calls it the largest beach on the east coast. Behind it, the lake has a 4 km promenade, and Gyeongpodae Pavilion, about 1 km from the beach, looks over the water. VisitKorea's first-time course pairs the beach and the pavilion with Ojukheon House, birthplace of the scholar Yulgok, and Chodang's tofu village and the Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park are both in Chodang-dong.
Anmok comes with it. Gangneung's Coffee Street, which Gangneung City places along Anmok Beach, is at 17 Changhae-ro, on the same coast road as Gyeongpo Beach at 514 Changhae-ro, and VisitKorea calls Gangneung a city of coffee and the first local district in Korea to host a coffee festival. Downtown Gangneung is about 6 km from the beach by VisitKorea's figure, so plan on taxis or a car for the station and the old town.

From Seoul
Take the KTX. VisitKorea's train guide, updated in August 2026, lists the Gangneung Line as running 237.7 km from Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul all the way to Gangneung Station, and names Seoul Station as a starting point of the line too, so board at either. From Gangneung Station, take a taxi or drive to Gyeongpo: VisitKorea puts the beach about 6 km from downtown Gangneung.
From Incheon Airport
Travel into Seoul and take the KTX on the Gangneung Line from Seoul Station, which VisitKorea's train guide names as a starting point of the line, to Gangneung Station. A taxi covers the last 6 km or so from downtown to Gyeongpo Beach, by VisitKorea's distance.
From Yangyang Airport
VisitKorea's domestic flights guide, updated in June 2026, places Yangyang International Airport in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon State, with the Yangyang Intercity Bus Terminal 20 minutes from the airport by city bus.
On your doorstep
- Gyeongpo Beach A sand bank formed between Gyeongpoho Lake and the ocean, VisitKorea says, with shallow water, a pine forest for forest bathing and a summer cultural art fair on the beach stage. VisitKorea lists it as open 24 hours, and Gangneung City calls it open year-round.
- Gyeongpoho Lake A naturally formed lake of 1,256,204 m² connected to the ocean, a nature protection site famous for migratory birds in winter, says VisitKorea; fishing is prohibited. Gangneung City adds spring cherry blossoms and a 4 km promenade with sculptures along the trail.
- Gyeongpodae Pavilion On a hill north of the lake, first built in 1326 and moved to its present site in 1508. Poems and calligraphy inside include works by King Sukjong and Yulgok, and VisitKorea says it is famous for the moon reflected on the lake. The area became a provincial park in 1981. Open 24 hours.
- Ojukheon House The birthplace of Yi I, the Joseon scholar and politician known as Yulgok, built in the early Joseon dynasty and designated a Treasure in 1963. The birth room, Mongryongsil, stands beside the Yulgok Memorial Hall and the Gangneung Municipal Museum. Open 09:00–18:00, last admission 17:00, all year.
- Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park Honours Heo Gyun, author of the Story of Hong Gildong, and his sister Heo Nanseolheon, in VisitKorea's words one of Korea's most esteemed female writers, with a memorial hall, the site of her birth home and a traditional tea experience. The park is open 24 hours; the hall opens 09:00–18:00 and closes on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok.
- Chodang Sundubu Village VisitKorea's Gangneung course calls it a village dedicated to making tofu. Korea's culture ministry webzine (2019) places it near Gyeongpoho Lake and says the tofu is set with East Sea seawater, a practice rarely found elsewhere in the world.
- Gangneung Coffee Street, Anmok Coffee shops of various sizes along Anmok Beach, many with ocean views, at 17 Changhae-ro, says Gangneung City; its creative-city site places the street in Songjeong-dong. VisitKorea says Gangneung has been known for coffee expertise since the 1980s. Each café sets its own hours.
- Gangneung Beach Beer Festival Held on Gyeongpo Beach in the middle of the summer, in July, according to Gangneung City.

Questions visitors ask
How far is Gyeongpo from Gangneung Station?
VisitKorea puts Gyeongpo Beach about 6 km from downtown Gangneung, so from Gangneung Station, the end of the KTX Gangneung Line, take a taxi or drive.
When is Ojukheon open, and why visit?
Every day of the year, 09:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:00, VisitKorea says. It is the birthplace of Yi I, the Joseon scholar known as Yulgok, built in the early Joseon dynasty and designated a Treasure in 1963, and VisitKorea's first-time course calls it the historic birthplace of the figures in Korea's bills. The Yulgok Memorial Hall and the Gangneung Municipal Museum are on the same site.
What is Chodang sundubu?
Soft tofu from Chodang, a village VisitKorea's Gangneung course calls dedicated to making tofu. Korea's culture ministry webzine (2019) places it near Gyeongpoho Lake and explains that the tofu is set with East Sea seawater. It says the name comes from Chodang, the pen name of Heo Yeop, father of Heo Gyun, though it calls that story a legend.
Is Gyeongpo good for families?
Yes. VisitKorea describes shallow water at Gyeongpo Beach and a pine forest alongside, with cycling around the lake, and lists the beach as open 24 hours. Gangneung City adds a 4 km lake promenade with sculptures along the trail. For another shallow family beach, at the city's northern end, Jumunjin is the alternative.
