Where to stay in Wonju
원주 숙소 지역
Wonju gives you two kinds of stay. Downtown has Gangwon Gamyeong, the Joseon governor's office, and three markets on Jungangsijang-gil, and the city tour bus calls there. Jijeong-myeon has Sogeumsan Grand Valley's bridges over the river and, a bus ride away, Museum SAN. Here is the quick answer for each trip, then everything behind it.

Why stay the night in Wonju
Wonju is close enough to Seoul for a day trip: Wonju City lists trains from Cheongnyangni from 06:40 to 23:15, and express and intercity buses that take about 1 hour 30 minutes. Stay a night anyway. Wonju's sights sit in two clusters, and both run on a clock.
Sogeumsan comes first. Wonju City's pages open the Suspension Bridge, the Ulleong Bridge and the Cliff Walk & Sky Tower at 09:00, and ticket sales end at 16:00 from November to April. A night at Ganhyeon puts you at the gate for the opening; a night downtown lets you take the city tour bus out in the morning and come back for the evening. Either way, you are not racing a train home in the afternoon.
Museum SAN is the second reason. It is in Wolsong-ri, 23 to 41 minutes from Sogeumsan on the city's tour-bus timetable dated February 2026, Wonju City lists it as closed every Monday, and the tour bus runs four City Tour Course loops and two Tourist Attraction course runs a day, none on Mondays. Sogeumsan in the morning and Museum SAN in the afternoon is a full day on its own.
Chiaksan is the third. Wonju City's Chiaksan page gives trail entry as restricted to 05:00–13:00 from November to March and 04:00–14:00 from April to October, and the bus from the Intercity Bus Terminal to Guryongsa takes about an hour by the city's hiking guide. Arriving from Seoul on the morning of the hike leaves little time; sleeping in Wonju gives you the whole window.
And the markets bracket the day. On Jungangsijang-gil, Wonju City gives the Jungang Citizens Traditional Market's hours as 04:00–21:00, and the Folk Flea Market's neighbouring dawn market trades from 04:00 to 09:00, April to December: two reasons to be in town at either end of the day.
The two bases compared
Our rule: stay downtown for a first visit, a trip without a car, the markets, Gangwon Gamyeong and Chiaksan; stay in Jijeong-myeon to be at Sogeumsan for the opening, to spend a day with Museum SAN, or to sleep by the river.
Downtown Wonju is the all-round base. Wonju City says the Jungang Citizens Traditional Market forms the central commercial area of the city together with Jungang Market, Jayu Market and the Street of Culture, all on Jungangsijang-gil, and that Jungang Market is in the centre of the downtown commercial district. Gangwon Gamyeong, at 85 Wonil-ro, was the governor's office for Gangwon-do Province during the Joseon era. The city tour bus calls at Wonju Bus Terminal and the Gamyeong, and Wonju Station is about 15 minutes by road from the Gamyeong, by the tour-bus timetable. The trade-off is Sogeumsan, which is a tour-bus or taxi ride away.
Jijeong-myeon is the stay for Sogeumsan Grand Valley and Museum SAN. The bridges, the Cliff Walk and the Sky Tower stand in the Ganhyeon Tourist Area, which Wonju City describes as a recreation area in a canyon where two rivers join, with private lodgings, pensions, condominiums and campsites. Museum SAN is in Wolsong-ri, at 260 Oak Valley 2-gil, a bus or car ride from the bridges. The trade-off is the evening: the markets and the Gamyeong are back in town.
Two nights is a good shape for most trips: one at Ganhyeon for Sogeumsan and Museum SAN, one downtown for the Gamyeong, the markets and an early start on Chiaksan.
Wonju City also calls Wonju a Noble Innovative City of relocated public institutions, and its Tourism Function Group includes the Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea National Park Service.
- Downtown Wonju: Gangwon Gamyeong, the Jungang, Jayu and Jungang Citizens markets, buses from Seoul and Incheon Airport, the city tour bus and local buses towards Chiaksan.
- Jijeong & Sogeumsan: the Suspension Bridge, the Ulleong Bridge, the Cliff Walk & Sky Tower, Museum SAN and riverside lodgings at Ganhyeon; tour bus or car.
Getting to Wonju
From Seoul, the train leaves from Cheongnyangni. Wonju City's transport page lists trains from Cheongnyangni Station to Wonju from 06:40 to 23:15; it gives no journey time. KTO's train guide, updated in August 2026, names Seowonju among the major stops on the Gangneung Line from Cheongnyangni, and Seoul City notes that the Gangneung-bound line branches off at Wonju. Wonju Station, Manjong Station and Seowonju Station are all stops on the city tour bus.
By bus from Seoul, Wonju City lists express buses from Seoul from 06:10 to 22:40 and intercity buses from Dong Seoul from 06:10 to 22:25, both taking about 1 hour 30 minutes, and intercity buses from Sangbong, 07:00 to 20:00, in about 1 hour 40 minutes.
From Incheon Airport, take the direct bus. Wonju City's directions page lists buses from Incheon International Airport to Wonju Express Bus Terminal every hour from 07:00 to 18:00, taking about 3 hours. Driving, the same page routes you by the Incheon Bridge Highway, the Yeongdong Highway and the Jungang Highway to Namwonju IC, 162.68 km in an expected 2 hours 10 minutes.
From elsewhere in Gangwon, Wonju City lists intercity buses from Chuncheon in about 1 hour 10 minutes, from Gangneung in about 1 hour 20 minutes (or about 1 hour 30 minutes by express bus), and from Sokcho in about 2 hours 10 minutes. From Yangyang Airport, its directions page lists a bus by way of Yangyang Express Bus Terminal to Wonju Express Bus Terminal three times a day, at 08:10, 11:10 and 16:10, in about 3 hours 30 minutes.
- Cheongnyangni to Wonju by train: 06:40 to 23:15 (Wonju City).
- Seoul to Wonju by express bus: 06:10 to 22:40, about 1 hour 30 minutes (Wonju City).
- Dong Seoul to Wonju by intercity bus: 06:10 to 22:25, about 1 hour 30 minutes (Wonju City).
- Incheon Airport to Wonju Express Bus Terminal: every hour, 07:00 to 18:00, about 3 hours (Wonju City).
- Chuncheon about 1 hour 10 minutes, Gangneung about 1 hour 20 minutes, Sokcho about 2 hours 10 minutes by intercity bus (Wonju City).
- Yangyang Airport: three buses a day, about 3 hours 30 minutes (Wonju City).
Getting around: the city tour bus and taxis
The Wonju City Tour Bus is the official link between the stations, downtown, Sogeumsan and Museum SAN. The city's tour-bus timetable dated February 2026 has two courses. It runs all year, but there is no service on Mondays (it does run when a Monday is a public holiday), on 1 January, or over Seollal and Chuseok. The city adds that departure times shift with traffic, and that rides can be refused if you lose your boarding pass or do not carry it, so keep it with you all day.
The City Tour Course leaves Wonju Station four times a day and calls at Wonju Bus Terminal, Manjong Station and Seowonju Station on its way to Sogeumsan Mountain, Oak Valley Resort and Museum SAN, then returns by way of Sogeumsan Mountain Grand Valley, Seowonju Station, Wonju Bus Terminal and Gangwon Gamyeong to Wonju Station. The Tourist Attraction Tour Course runs twice a day from Sogeumsan Mountain to Museum SAN, then to the Traditional Market Culture Sharing Platform, Gangwon Gamyeong and Wonju Station. These are the key times from the timetable:
For everything else, take a taxi: between Wonju Station and downtown with luggage, and between Ganhyeon and Museum SAN outside the tour-bus runs. With a car, Wonju City says Sogeumsan visitors park at the entrance and walk in.
- Wonju Station departures, City Tour Course: 9:20, 10:40, 15:40 and 17:00.
- Museum SAN, City Tour Course: 10:31, 11:51, 16:51 and 18:11.
- Sogeumsan Mountain Grand Valley on the way back: 10:56, 12:16, 17:16 and 18:36.
- Gangwon Gamyeong on the way back: 11:35, 12:55, 17:55 and 19:15; Wonju Station 11:50, 13:10, 18:10 and 19:30.
- Tourist Attraction Tour Course: Sogeumsan Mountain 12:50 and 14:20, Museum SAN 13:13 and 14:43, Gangwon Gamyeong 13:51 and 15:21.
- Wonju Bus Terminal to Gangwon Gamyeong: 12 minutes on the timetable; Gangwon Gamyeong to Wonju Station: 15 minutes.
Sogeumsan Grand Valley and Museum SAN
Sogeumsan Grand Valley is the Ganhyeon Tourist Area: Wonju City's pages for the bridges all place them inside it. The city describes Ganhyeon as a recreation area in a canyon where two rivers join, at the meeting of the Seomgang River and the Samsancheon Stream, whose upper reaches remain undeveloped. The government first designated it a tourist spot in May 1985, and the city lists it fifth of the Eight Sights of Wonju.
Three structures make the visit. The Sogeumsan Mountain Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian bridge 200 m long, 100 m high and 1.5 m wide, reached by a wooden walkway, with a skywalk observatory over the Seomgang River. The Wonju Ulleong Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge 404 m long, twice the length of the Suspension Bridge, in the city's words. The Cliff Walk is attached to the cliff face of Sogeumsan Mountain, and the Sky Tower is an observation deck with a bird's-eye view over the whole Ganhyeon site from 150 m above the ground.
Wonju City's pages give opening hours of 09:00–18:00 from May to October and 09:00–17:00 from November to April, with ticket sales until 18:00 in summer and until 16:00 in winter; they list no closing day. Pets on a leash are welcome in the tourist area but not on the Suspension Bridge or at the campsites, and the city notes that condominium lodgings at Ganhyeon require advance reservations.
Museum SAN is in Wolsong-ri, at 260 Oak Valley 2-gil, under the slogan Disconnect to Connect. Wonju City traces the visit from the Welcome Center through the Flower Garden and the Water Garden to the main hall, whose four wings link quadrangular, triangular and circular spaces, then on to the Meditation Hall, the Stone Garden and James Turrell Hall. The city says the museum was named one of the Korea Tourism 100 for 2019–20, and it lists the museum as closed every Monday. On the city tour bus it is 23 minutes from Sogeumsan Mountain on the Tourist Attraction course, or 41 minutes on the City Tour Course, which stops at Oak Valley Resort first.
Downtown: Gangwon Gamyeong and the markets
Gangwon Gamyeong was the office of the governor of Gangwon-do Province during the Joseon era. Wonju City writes that Gangwon-do was first established in 1395, that the office oversaw 26 local administrative units, and that it closed with the provincial reorganisation of 1895. Pojeongnu, the gate, and Seonhwadang, the governor's main office, are preserved in good condition. The Gamyeong, at 85 Wonil-ro in Ilsan-dong, has been Historic Site No. 439 since 9 March 2002, the city counts it second of the Eight Sights of Wonju, and heritage commentators are on site from 10:00 to 16:30 every day.
The markets line Jungangsijang-gil. Jungang Market, at number 6, sells food, clothing, fruit, dried fish and general goods, says Wonju City; KTO adds that it was selected as a cultural tourism market in 2015, is open all year round, and has an art market on its second floor with workshops, performances and a flea market on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. Jayu Market, at number 11, trades in clothes and accessories, with street vendors at its entrance. The Jungang Citizens Traditional Market, at 31-3, was a fruit and vegetable wholesale market until 2000 and has been a registered wholesale and retail market since February 2006.
Beyond Jungangsijang-gil, the Wonju Folk Flea Market at 531-1 Gangbyeon-ro opens on days of the month ending in 2 and 7, with a dawn market beside it from 04:00 to 09:00 between April and December. Wonju Hanji Theme Park, at 151 Hanjigongwon-gil, teaches traditional Korean printing and hanji paper, open 09:00–18:00 and closed on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok. The Pak Kyongni Literature Park is open 10:00–17:00, closed on 1 January, Seollal, Chuseok and the fourth Monday of each month.
Chiaksan National Park and the Eight Sights of Wonju
Chiaksan is Wonju's mountain day. KTO describes several peaks over 1,000 m, the highest Birobong at 1,288 m, in a national park designated in 1984 that covers 182.09 km², with a 14 km trail linking the peaks from north to south. Its highlights, KTO says, include Guryongsa Temple and Seryeompokpo Falls, and it becomes a white wonderland in winter. KTO also notes that the park is subject to abrupt closure in bad weather.
Guryongsa, at 500 Guryongsa-ro in Socho-myeon, stands at the foot of Chiaksan and was founded, Wonju City says, by Great Master Uisang in 668; the name means nine dragons. The city's hiking guide puts it about an hour by local bus from the Intercity Bus Terminal, with a change at Taejang 2-dong, or direct on holidays. Trail entry is restricted to 05:00–13:00 from November to March and to 04:00–14:00 from April to October, at control points including the Guryong district, so stay downtown and take an early bus.
Wonju City's own list of the Eight Sights of Wonju, in its order:
- 1. Guryongsa Temple
- 2. Gangwon Gamyeong, the Gangwon Province administration building
- 3. Sangwonsa Temple
- 4. Birobong Peak
- 5. Ganhyeon Tourist Area
- 6. Yeongwonsanseong Fortress
- 7. Yongsomak Catholic Church
- 8. Maitreya Buddha Statue

Wonju City's festival pages list these, without fixed dates:
