Daegwallyeong & Alpensia
대관령·알펜시아
Olympic ski jumps, sheep on the high pastures and the Daegwallyeong Snow Festival.

The short answer
Stay at Alpensia for the Olympic side of Pyeongchang. The resort sits, in its own words, at an altitude of 700 m in Daegwallyeong, and it hosted events at its ski jump, biathlon, cross-country and sliding venues at PyeongChang 2018. The ski jumping hills still stand at the heart of the Alpensia Sport Park, and the IOC says the centre is now the main training facility for Korea's national ski jumping teams, with a ski history museum inside. The IOC says the site of the dismantled Olympic Stadium is now a park with the PyeongChang Olympic Museum.
Daegwallyeong-myeon's ranches are the other draw. KTO puts Daegwallyeong Yangtte Ranch at 920 m, with sheep grazing freely except in winter, and Daegwallyeong Sky Ranch raises more than 400 cows, sheep and horses. In 2026 the Daegwallyeong Snow Festival ran from 13 to 22 February by Songcheon Stream. To get here, take the KTX to Jinbu Station and the resort's guest-only shuttle, or the bus from Dong Seoul to Hoenggye, which Alpensia gives as its location.
Best for
- The 2018 Olympic venues
- Families who want to feed the sheep
- Arriving by bus from Seoul
- The Daegwallyeong Snow Festival
- Trying bobsleigh in summer or winter
Think twice if
- Skiers after the biggest ski area: the IOC gives that title to Yongpyong
- Temples and Odaesan's fir forest
- KTX travellers without a resort booking: the Jinbu shuttle is for guests only
Getting here
| Station | Lines |
|---|---|
| Jinbu Station | KTX Gyeonggang Line from Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni (korea.net, 2017); Alpensia guest shuttle, about 20 min, twice a day |
| Hoenggye | Bus from Dong Seoul, by Gangbyeon Station on subway Line 2, to Hoenggye, where Alpensia is located (Alpensia) |
| Seasonal ski buses | Private operator on Alpensia's shuttle page: Seoul pick-ups at Hongik University, Sinchon, Myeong-dong, Dongdaemun Gate and Sports Complex; Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2 |
From Seoul by KTX
Take the KTX on the Gyeonggang Line to Jinbu Station; korea.net's 2017 announcement lists trains from Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni, and Alpensia's own introduction puts the resort itself about one to two hours from Seoul, by the Second Yeongdong Expressway or by KTX via Jinbu Station. The resort's shuttle from Jinbu takes about 20 minutes, at 11:00 and 14:10, returning from Alpensia at 10:30 and 13:40. It is for Alpensia guests, so carry your reservation voucher or facilities ticket.
From Seoul by bus
Alpensia's public-transport page names a bus from the eastern Seoul terminal by Gangbyeon Station on subway Line 2, Dong Seoul, to Hoenggye, where the resort is located. In the ski season, a private ski-bus operator on Alpensia's shuttle page runs between Seoul and Alpensia, with pick-ups at five stops including Hongik University Station and Myeong-dong Station. Book it with the operator.
From Incheon Airport
By road, the IOC says a 22 km expressway link cut the drive from Incheon International Airport to PyeongChang to around 95 minutes. Without a car, take the seasonal private ski bus on Alpensia's shuttle page. At Terminal 1, go from arrivals Gate 1 on the first floor across the street to bus stop 1C; at Terminal 2, go from arrivals Gate 3 on the first floor to platforms 2B and 3A.
From Yangyang Airport
Alpensia's introduction puts Yangyang International Airport about 40 minutes away, and the East Sea coast about 30 minutes. Alpensia's shuttle page lists its guest shuttle from Jinbu Station and a private ski bus from Seoul and Incheon Airport, with no Yangyang service, so come from Yangyang by car, which also opens up the ranches around Daegwallyeong.
On your doorstep
- Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre At the heart of the Alpensia Sport Park, in CONI's 2018 venue description, which lists ski jumping, the Nordic combined jumping and snowboard Big Air at PyeongChang 2018. The IOC says it is now the main training facility for Korea's national ski jumping teams, in use all year, and it houses a ski history museum.
- Alpensia Sliding Centre Reopened in October 2019, the IOC says, and visitors can try bobsleigh there in summer and winter. The PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation runs leisure activities at the centre, including wheel bobsleigh.
- Alpensia Biathlon and Cross-Country Centres Used for winter training and youth sports camps. The IOC says they hosted biathlon, cross-country and Nordic combined at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games, and the Legacy Foundation runs laser-gun biathlon at the Biathlon Centre.
- PyeongChang Olympic Museum The temporary Olympic Stadium, where the 2018 Games opened and closed, was dismantled after the Games. The IOC says its site has since been turned into a park, home to the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation, the PyeongChang Olympic Museum, which the Foundation manages, and the Wall of Champions.
- Daegwallyeong Yangtte Ranch A sheep ranch at 920 m on about 205,000 m² of grassland, at 483-32 Daegwallyeongmaru-gil. KTO says the sheep graze freely except in winter, visitors can feed them hay, and the circular walk takes about 40 minutes. Its hours change with the weather, and it closes on Seollal and Chuseok.
- Daegwallyeong Sky Ranch An environmentally friendly ranch in the highlands of Daegwallyeong Pass, in KTO's words, with more than 400 cows, sheep and horses and a 45-minute tractor tour. Open all year: 09:00–17:30 from October to March and 09:00–18:00 from April to September.
- Daegwallyeong Snow Festival grounds By Songcheon Stream, at 135-9 Daegwallyeong-ro. The festival began in 1993, and in 2026 it ran from 13 to 22 February, 10:00–18:00, with a snow tunnel, sledding and folk activities, by KTO's listing.
- Ski700 and the resort Alpensia's own ski area, Ski700, has six slopes on the resort's facility list, alongside sledding, the Alpine Coaster, the Ocean700 water park, two golf courses, a convention centre, a concert hall and the Music Tent.
One easy day from here
- Morning Start at Daegwallyeong Yangtte Ranch for the 40-minute circular walk and hay for the sheep, or take the 45-minute tractor tour at Sky Ranch, which opens at 09:00.
- Late morning The Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre and its ski history museum, at the heart of the Sport Park.
- Afternoon The PyeongChang Olympic Museum and the Wall of Champions in the park on the former stadium site. In winter, ski Ski700 instead, or try bobsleigh at the Sliding Centre.
- Evening Back at the resort. In Snow Festival week, spend the late afternoon by Songcheon Stream: in 2026 the festival ran from 13 to 22 February, until 18:00.
Before you book
- The Jinbu shuttle is for Alpensia guests only and runs twice a day, from Jinbu at 11:00 and 14:10. Arriving by KTX? Book at the resort and time your train to those departures.
- Coming by public bus? Alpensia names the route from Dong Seoul to Hoenggye, where the resort is located, so Hoenggye is the place to aim for.
- In 2026 the Daegwallyeong Snow Festival ran from 13 to 22 February by Songcheon Stream. Book early for its weekends.
- For pastures full of animals, come between spring and autumn: KTO says the Yangtte sheep graze freely except in winter, and Sky Ranch closes at 17:30 from October to March, against 18:00 in summer. The resort shuttle runs only to Jinbu Station, so bring a car for the ranches.
Questions visitors ask
Which KTX station is for Alpensia?
Jinbu Station. Alpensia's own site sends KTX travellers there and runs a shuttle for its guests, about 20 minutes, leaving Jinbu at 11:00 and 14:10 and Alpensia at 10:30 and 13:40. Show a reservation voucher or facilities ticket to board.
Is the Olympic Stadium still there?
No. The IOC says the temporary stadium, where the 2018 Games opened and closed, was dismantled after the Games, and its site has since been turned into a park, home to the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation, the PyeongChang Olympic Museum and the Wall of Champions. The ski jumping, biathlon, cross-country and sliding centres at Alpensia are all still in use.
Can I try an Olympic sport at Alpensia?
Yes. The IOC says visitors can try bobsleigh at the Alpensia Sliding Centre in summer and winter, and the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation runs wheel bobsleigh there and laser-gun biathlon at the Biathlon Centre. The Ski Jumping Centre, now the main training facility for Korea's national ski jumping teams, also houses a ski history museum.
How high is Daegwallyeong?
Alpensia's own site says the resort sits at an altitude of 700 m in Daegwallyeong, and KTO puts Daegwallyeong Yangtte Ranch higher still, at 920 m, and the top of Balwangsan, reached by the Balwangsan Cable Car at Yongpyong, at 1,458 m. Yongpyong's site calls Daegwallyeong the Roof of Korea.
