Nampo & Jung-gu
남포·중구
Busan's old downtown: fish market, film street, hilltop tower and night market.

The short answer
Stay in Nampo if you want Busan's old downtown on your doorstep. Jagalchi Market is one of the largest seafood markets in Korea; BIFF Square, where the film festival grew up, runs 428 metres through Nampo-dong; Gukje Market, known as Busan's Namdaemun, and Bupyeong Kkangtong Market, home of Korea's first night market, fill the streets around it; and Busan Tower rises from Yongdusan Park on the hill above. This is the city's designated Yongdusan Park and Jagalchi Special Tourist Zone.
Three Line 1 stations serve the district: Nampo, Jagalchi and Jungang. Line 1 also runs straight to Busan Station and Seomyeon, and Gamcheon Culture Village is a metro and village-bus hop away from Toseong Station. This is the base for markets, street food, history and photography; the beaches lie at the other end of the network.

| Nampo | Line 1 |
| Jagalchi | Line 1 |

| Toseong (for Gamcheon) | Line 1 |
From Gimhae Airport
Go by rail. Take the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail from Airport Station to Sasang, about six minutes, change to Line 2 and ride to Seomyeon, then change to Line 1 for Nampo or Jagalchi. It is the same pattern as the city's own airport-to-City-Hall directions, with two transfers, and VisitKorea puts Jagalchi Market and Gukje Market about 60 minutes from the airport by public transport. A taxi is the quicker door-to-door choice at about 40 minutes, from the stand on the second floor of the international terminal.
From Busan Station (KTX)
Line 1 runs from Busan Station to Nampo and Jagalchi with no transfer, which makes Nampo the most convenient sightseeing base for KTX travellers. Use Nampo Station Exit 7 for Yongdusan Park and Busan Tower, or Jungang Station, also on Line 1, where Exit 5 is about five minutes' walk from the park. For Gamcheon Culture Village, stay on Line 1 to Toseong.
On your doorstep
- Jagalchi Market One of the largest seafood markets in Korea, selling both live and dried fish. Open 05:00–22:00, closed on the first and third Tuesdays; Jagalchi Station is on Line 1.
- BIFF Square A 428-metre street from Buyeong Theater in Nampo-dong to the Chungmu-dong overpass, named BIFF Square on 13 September 1996. The BIFF Square Ground Opening is held here every year on the eve of the festival.
- Busan Gukje Market Known as Busan's Namdaemun Market. Open 09:00–20:00, closed on the first and third Sundays.
- Bupyeong (Kkangtong) Market Named for the imported canned goods sold here during the Korean War, and the place where Korea's first night market was held. The night market runs 19:30–23:30.
- Yongdusan Park A hillside park with an octagonal pavilion, a flower clock, the citizens' bell and a statue of Yi Sun-sin. From Nampo Station Exit 7, walk about 10 minutes and take the escalator on the right.
- Busan Tower A 120-metre observation tower in Yongdusan Park, open all year from 10:00 to 22:00, last admission 21:30.
- Bosu-dong Book Street The old-fashioned book street that, in VisitKorea's words, represents Busan.
- Gamcheon Culture Village Formed by Korean War refugees who built staircase-style houses up the hillside, now alleys of murals and sculptures, open 24 hours. Take Line 1 to Toseong Station, Exit 6, then village bus Saha1-1, Seo-gu2 or Seo-gu2-2 to Gamjeong Elementary School.
One easy day from here
- Early morning Start at Jagalchi Market, which opens at 05:00, among the stalls of live and dried fish.
- Morning Walk up to Yongdusan Park from Nampo Station Exit 7 and go up Busan Tower when it opens at 10:00.
- Afternoon Take Line 1 to Toseong and the village bus up to Gamcheon Culture Village for its murals and staircase lanes.
- Late afternoon Back in Nampo, browse Gukje Market and Bosu-dong Book Street, then stroll the length of BIFF Square.
- Evening Finish at the Bupyeong Kkangtong night market, open 19:30–23:30.
Before you book
- Book near Nampo Station: Exit 7 leads to Yongdusan Park, and Line 1 runs straight to Busan Station and Seomyeon.
- Plan around the market closing days: Jagalchi closes on the first and third Tuesdays, Gukje Market on the first and third Sundays.
- The Busan International Film Festival is held in autumn; recent editions ran 17–26 September 2025 and 6–15 October 2026. Nampo hosts the BIFF Square Ground Opening on the festival's eve, and in 2025 Community BIFF ran at BIFF Square from 18 to 21 September, so a Nampo base keeps you at the festival's birthplace.
- On 31 December, the New Year's bell-tolling takes place at Yongdusan Park, a short walk from Nampo Station, so a stay here puts you right beside it.
- No airport limousine runs to Nampo. With heavy bags, take a taxi from the airport, about 40 minutes, rather than the two-transfer rail route.
Questions visitors ask
Is Nampo a good area to stay in Busan?
Yes, if you came for markets, food and history. Nampo is Busan's old downtown, with Jagalchi Market, BIFF Square, Gukje Market, the Kkangtong night market and Busan Tower gathered around a cluster of Line 1 stations, and Gamcheon Culture Village close by. It is the wrong choice only for a beach holiday; for that, base yourself in Haeundae or Gwangalli.
Is Jagalchi Market open every day?
No. Jagalchi Market is open 05:00–22:00 but closes on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Gukje Market closes on the first and third Sundays, so build your market day around both.
How do I get up to Busan Tower and Yongdusan Park?
From Nampo Station (Line 1) Exit 7, walk about 10 minutes and take the escalator on the right up to the park. Alternatively, Jungang Station (Line 1) Exit 5 is about five minutes' walk away. Busan Tower is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, with last admission at 21:30.
How do I get to Gamcheon Culture Village from Nampo?
Take Line 1 to Toseong Station and leave by Exit 6, then ride village bus Saha1-1, Seo-gu2 or Seo-gu2-2 to Gamjeong Elementary School. The village is open 24 hours, and its mural-lined alleys reward an unhurried afternoon.
