The short answer

Stay at Busan Station if your trip runs on trains and ferries. This is where the KTX from Seoul Station and the SRT from Suseo arrive, Line 1 runs from the station straight to Seomyeon, City Hall and Nampo, and the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal, with ferries to Hitakatsu, Fukuoka, Osaka and Shimonoseki, sits close by. A base here turns an early departure into a short walk.

The neighbourhood has more character than most station districts. Busan Chinatown's Shanghai Street lies in Choryang-dong, Choryang Ibagu-gil climbs the hill near the station where people built their homes in harder times, and Sanbok Road along the top has a night scene the tourism board calls especially beautiful. Nampo's markets are a short ride down Line 1.

Best for

  • Early KTX and SRT departures
  • Ferries to Japan from Busan Port
  • Short stays mixing rail travel and Nampo
  • Chinatown and hillside night views
  • Onward rail to Incheon Airport

Think twice if

  • Beach holidays
  • Travellers on KTX-Eum, which arrives at Bujeon instead
  • Anyone who wants an airport bus to the door

From Gimhae Airport

Rail is the way in. Take the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail from Airport Station to Sasang, about six minutes, change to Line 2 and ride to Seomyeon, then switch to Line 1 for Busan Station or Choryang. This follows the city's official airport-to-City-Hall route, which uses the same two transfers before continuing on Line 1. No airport limousine serves Busan Station, so the alternative is a taxi from the stand on the second floor of the international terminal.

Arriving by KTX

Busan Station is where the KTX from Seoul Station arrives, about 3 hours to 3 hours 20 minutes according to VisitKorea, and the SRT from Suseo, about 2 hours 30 minutes. From Incheon Airport, KTX via Gwangmyeong takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. KTX-Eum trains from Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni run to Bujeon instead. Line 1 leaves from the station for Seomyeon, City Hall and Nampo, and KORAIL's foreigner line is 1599-7777.
