Hahoe Village
하회마을
Sleep inside a Joseon-era clan village and have its lanes to yourself after closing.

The short answer
Stay in Hahoe Village. It is the reason to spend a night in Andong rather than pass through. Hahoe is the clan village of the Pungsan Ryu, founded in the 14th to 15th centuries and inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as one of the Historic Villages of Korea, with the Nakdong River curling round it in an S-shape. Some of its old houses run minbak, so you can sleep inside the village itself. The village closes to visitors at 18:00 from April to September and at 17:00 from October to March; after that the day visitors are gone and the lanes are yours.
The trade-off is distance. Hahoe is about a 30-minute drive from Andong Station and downtown Andong, served by city buses Express 2, 210 and Pungcheon 2 and by the Hahoe Shuttle. Rooms are traditional, and many hanok put guests on mats and blankets on the floor rather than in beds. For one night of old Korea, nowhere in Andong comes close.

From Seoul (KTX-Eum)
KTX-Eum runs to Andong Station from Cheongnyangni, Seoul Station and Sangbong. VisitKorea gives the trip from Cheongnyangni as about 1 hour 50 minutes; trains starting at Seoul Station take longer, over two hours on Andong City's published timetable. At Andong Station, change to city bus Express 2, 210 or Pungcheon 2 for Hahoe, or take a taxi: the village is about 30 minutes away by car.
From Busan
KTX-Eum runs direct from Bujeon Station in Busan to Andong Station, and Andong City's tourism office puts the trip at about two hours. From the station, continue to Hahoe on city bus Express 2, 210 or Pungcheon 2, or by taxi, about 30 minutes by car.
From Andong Station
City buses Express 2, 210 and Pungcheon 2 run to Hahoe, and the Hahoe Shuttle city bus also serves the village. The first Express 2 leaves the station and terminal area at about 07:20–07:30. Transfers between city buses are free within an hour if you tag your card when you get off. Drivers park at the first car park and ride the free shuttle bus from in front of the ticket office to the village entrance, about 1.2 km.
On your doorstep
- The village lanes About 100 tiled-roof houses and about 130 thatched ones, with pavilions, study halls and the mud-walled, thatched homes once lived in by commoners. Hahoe has been a National Folklore Cultural Heritage site since 1984.
- Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori A masked ritual of about 800 years for the village's peace and prosperity, in eight acts that satirise the aristocracy, and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2022. Performances start at 14:00 at the theatre at the village entrance, Tuesday to Sunday from March to December and at weekends in January and February, last about an hour and carry English subtitles.
- Hahoe Mask Museum Opened in 1995 at the entrance to the village, with five permanent halls showing masks from around the world alongside Hahoe's own; the Hahoe masks are a National Treasure. Open 09:30–18:00, closed on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok.
- Buyongdae Cliff A cliff about 64 metres high where the Taebaek range ends, and VisitKorea's pick for a panoramic view of the village. From the top, Hahoe sits inside the river bend like a lotus flower. A narutbae, a traditional boat, is among its facilities.
- Ogyeonjeongsa, Gyeomamjeongsa and Hwacheonseowon Three sites that VisitKorea places near Buyongdae, worth adding to the cliff walk.
- Byeongsan Seowon A Confucian academy 4 km east of Hahoe, framed by the Nakdong in front and Hwasan Mountain behind. Yu Seong-nyong moved it here in 1572 and it took the name Byeongsanseowon in 1614; it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List with Korea's Neo-Confucian academies in 2019. City bus 210 serves it.
- Seonyu Julbul Nori Hahoe's traditional fireworks, still performed in the village and described by VisitKorea as a purification ritual.
One easy day from here
- Morning Arrive on KTX-Eum, take city bus Express 2, 210 or Pungcheon 2 from Andong Station to Hahoe, and leave your bags at your minbak.
- Early afternoon Watch the Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori at 14:00 at the theatre by the village entrance, then visit the Hahoe Mask Museum, also at the village entrance.
- Late afternoon Head up Buyongdae Cliff for the view of the village inside the Nakdong's S-bend.
- Evening Once the village closes to visitors at 17:00 or 18:00, walk the lanes between the tiled and thatched houses with the crowds gone.
- Next morning Ride city bus 210 to Byeongsan Seowon, 4 km east, before heading back to the station.
Before you book
- Book inside the village, not near it. Hahoe closes to visitors at 18:00 from April to September and 17:00 from October to March, and the evening after closing is the whole point of staying.
- Expect floor bedding: many hanok put guests on mats and blankets on the floor. If you need a bed, choose a room listed with one, and read the facilities list, as not every hanok has modern conveniences.
- Treat the house with care. Hanok are wooden heritage buildings, some of them designated cultural assets, so be careful with anything that burns.
- Book early for late September and early October: the Maskdance Festival ran 26 September – 5 October 2025 and 24 September – 4 October 2026.
- Driving? Park at the first car park and take the free shuttle bus from the ticket office. Vehicles registered to disabled drivers are allowed on to the tourist-information car park at the village entrance after a check at the vehicle control point.
Questions visitors ask
Can you stay overnight inside Hahoe Village?
Yes. Some of the village's old houses run minbak and take guests for the night, and VisitKorea lists hanok stays among the village's facilities. Sleeping inside is the best way to see Hahoe: the village closes to visitors at 18:00 from April to September and at 17:00 from October to March, and after that the lanes belong to the people staying there.
How do I get from Andong Station to Hahoe Village?
By city bus Express 2, 210 or Pungcheon 2; the Hahoe Shuttle city bus also serves the village. By taxi or car it is about 30 minutes. From the ticket office, a free shuttle bus runs the 1.2 km to the village entrance; drivers park at the first car park and ride the same shuttle.
When is the Hahoe mask dance performed?
The Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori starts at 14:00 at the theatre at the village entrance, Tuesday to Sunday from March to December and at weekends in January and February. It runs about an hour, with subtitles in English, Chinese and Japanese, and was inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022. Staying in the village means you can watch it without watching the clock for a bus.
Did Queen Elizabeth II visit Hahoe?
Yes, on 21 April 1999. Her 73rd birthday was celebrated at a hanok in the village that year, and VisitKorea still presents Hahoe as the main traditional Korean village that Britain's Queen visited. The village she saw, tiled and thatched houses inside the Nakdong's bend, is the one you wake up in when you stay the night.
