Where to stay in Paju
파주 숙소 지역
Paju is two trips in one city: the DMZ at Imjingak, where Paju City sells DMZ Peace Tour tickets in person from 09:00, and the art and book towns of Heyri Art Valley and Paju Book City. You have two bases: Imjingak and Munsan for the border, Heyri and Book City for galleries and books. Here is the quick answer for each trip, then everything behind it.

Why stay the night in Paju
The first reason is the DMZ, and it starts early. Paju City runs the DMZ Peace Tour from Imjingak: you buy a ticket at the Imjingak DMZ Ticket Office and ride its shuttle bus to the 3rd Tunnel, Dora Observatory and the DMZ video and exhibition halls, with the Dorasan shuttle train on the course. Tickets are sold from 09:00 to 14:30, only to people who are present at Imjingak, and the office closes early once the day's tickets are sold out. VisitKorea says individual visits to Dora Observatory are not allowed, so the tour is the way in. A night in Munsan, about 13 minutes from Imjingak by taxi on VisitKorea's figure, puts you at the window for 09:00 instead of on an early train out of Seoul.
Imjingak repays the rest of the day. VisitKorea calls it a unification and security tour complex, about 7 km from the DMZ, that preserves the Freedom Bridge and the Imjingang rail bridge from the Korean War. Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park, open 24 hours all year, has the Hill of Wind with its pinwheels, the Hill of Music and an outdoor stage by the water, Paju City says. The Peace Gondola, which VisitKorea calls Korea's first gondola to cross over the Civilian Control Zone, runs to Camp Greaves, a former US base about 2 km from the Southern Limit Line.
The second reason is the art and book towns. VisitKorea describes Heyri Art Valley as a neighbourhood of inspiration, creative workshops, exhibitions, festivals and education in the creative arts, which grew when artists gathered during the development of Paju Book City. Book City itself, in VisitKorea's 2025 guide, is a cultural complex home to Korea's leading publishers, printing houses, cafés, museums and bookstores, around Munbal-dong, with the Forest of Wisdom and its Hangeul-shaped bookshelf. Galleries and shops in Heyri set their own hours, and the two towns reward an unhurried day rather than a dash from Seoul.
No single base puts both trips on your doorstep, which is why we split Paju into two. Two nights is the right shape for most trips: Heyri for the art and books, then Munsan the night before the DMZ.
The two bases compared
Our rule: stay by Imjingak and Munsan for the DMZ, and in Heyri and Book City for galleries, books and museums.
Imjingak and the DMZ is the base for the border. Munsan Station is on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, about an hour from Seoul Station by VisitKorea's 2025 figure, and Imjingak is about 13 minutes on by taxi; a few trains a day continue to Imjingang Station at the Imjingak entrance. The DMZ Peace Tour starts here, the Peace Gondola runs from here to Camp Greaves, and Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park is open around the clock. VisitKorea's 2025 guide adds Dokgae Bridge and Art Space BEAT 131, and the Paju Jangdan Bean Festival comes to Imjingak from 27 to 29 November 2026. The trade-off is Monday: the DMZ Peace Tour, Camp Greaves, Dokgae Bridge and DMZ LIVE are all closed that day.
Heyri and Paju Book City is the base for art and books. Heyri Art Valley has free entry and free parking, VisitKorea says, and Paju City lists the Heyri Museum of Modern History of Korea, a theme museum founded in 2015. Book City has the publishers, printing houses and bookstores, the Forest of Wisdom at 145 Hoedong-gil and the Letterpress Museum. It is the base for a trip by car: Heyri's own 2022 guide sends rail travellers to Geumchon Station on the Gyeongui Line for a local bus, and Paju City split the direct bus route from Seoul on 29 November 2025, so directions written before then describe the old route. The trade-off is the DMZ morning: the ticket office is at Imjingak, not here.
With one night, follow the purpose of the trip: Munsan for the DMZ, Heyri for the art. With two, take Heyri first and Munsan second, so the 09:00 ticket office is your first stop of the second day.
- Imjingak & the DMZ: the DMZ Peace Tour ticket office, the Peace Gondola, Camp Greaves and Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park; Munsan Station on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line.
- Heyri & Paju Book City: galleries, workshops, publishers, bookstores and the Forest of Wisdom; free parking at Heyri; best with a car.
Getting to Paju
By train, take the Gyeongui–Jungang Line from Seoul Station to Munsan: about one hour, VisitKorea's 2025 guide says, and Gongdeok and Hongik Univ. stations have more frequent departures towards Munsan. Korail's history of the line dates the Seoul–Munsan service to 1 July 2009, the extension from Munsan to Imjingang to 28 March 2020 and the last stretch from Imjingang to Dorasan to 11 December 2021.
From Munsan to Imjingak, VisitKorea's 2025 guide gives three options. A taxi takes about 13 minutes. Community bus 058B takes about 31 minutes and runs less often. And a few trains continue from Munsan to Imjingang Station, at the Imjingak entrance: on weekdays at 09:20 and 17:05, and at weekends and on holidays at 09:35, 10:35, 15:45 and 17:20. For a 09:00 start at the ticket office, the taxi is the one to plan on.
By bus from Seoul, VisitKorea's alternative to the train is route 9710 from the Sungnyemun stop near Seoul Station Exit 3, a ride of up to 1 hour 50 minutes. On a guided day, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization runs the EG Tour, a foreigner-only programme that starts from Seoul with a professional guide on every tour. Its course R3, A Powerful DMZ Exploration, visits Imjingak, the Bridge of Freedom and Dokgae Bridge on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with pick-ups at Hongik Univ. Station Exit 8 and Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 5 and departures between 08:20 and 08:30.
For Heyri and Paju Book City, a car is the simplest choice: VisitKorea lists free parking at Heyri Art Valley, 70-21 Heyrimaeul-gil, Tanhyeon-myeon. By rail, Heyri's own 2022 guide sends visitors to Geumchon Station on the Gyeongui Line, with a local bus for the last stretch. Older guides also describe a direct bus from Seoul, but Paju City split that route into two on 29 November 2025, so use directions written after that date.
From Incheon Airport, ride AREX towards Seoul and change to the Gyeongui–Jungang Line at Hongik Univ. or Gongdeok for Munsan. Landing late, Incheon Airport's night bus N5700 runs to Geumchon Station: it leaves Terminal 1 at 00:30 and 04:10 and takes 90 minutes, and Terminal 2 at 00:10 and 03:50, about 20 minutes longer. Going back, it leaves Geumchon Station for the airport at 21:30 and 00:10.
- Seoul Station to Munsan: Gyeongui–Jungang Line, about one hour; more frequent departures from Gongdeok and Hongik Univ. (VisitKorea, 2025).
- Munsan to Imjingak: taxi about 13 minutes; community bus 058B about 31 minutes; a few trains to Imjingang Station (VisitKorea, 2025).
- Seoul by bus: route 9710 from the Sungnyemun stop near Seoul Station Exit 3, up to 1 hour 50 minutes (VisitKorea, 2025).
- Guided: EG Tour R3 to Imjingak, the Bridge of Freedom and Dokgae Bridge, Fridays to Sundays, foreigners only (Gyeonggi Tourism Organization).
- Heyri: by car, with free parking (VisitKorea); by rail to Geumchon Station on the Gyeongui Line (Heyri's own guide, 2022).
- Incheon Airport late at night: N5700 to Geumchon Station, 90 minutes from Terminal 1 at 00:30 and 04:10 (Incheon Airport).
The DMZ Peace Tour: the rules
Paju City's DMZ Peace Tour is the way into the 3rd Tunnel and Dora Observatory, and its rules decide where you sleep. You buy a ticket at the Imjingak DMZ Ticket Office and ride the tour's shuttle bus. Ticketing runs from 09:00 to 14:30 and closes early when the day's tickets are sold out. Only those who are present at Imjingak can buy tickets, and tickets are issued once every member of your group has arrived. Paju City's site offers online reservation, but the ticket itself is collected at Imjingak.
Bring ID, because Paju City states that those without ID cannot enter. Foreign visitors need a passport, an alien registration card or a US military ID; Korean citizens need a resident card, driver's licence or passport. Copies, screenshots and expired passports are not accepted, and minors must come with a responsible adult.
The tour is closed every Monday, on weekday public holidays, on New Year's Day and on Seollal and Chuseok, combining Paju City's English and Korean pages; its Korean tour portal adds that holiday weekends are open. All tours can be suspended for DMZ security threats, adverse weather conditions or safety issues, so keep a spare day in your plans.
On the course, Paju City lists the 3rd Tunnel, Dora Observatory, the DMZ video and exhibition halls, the symbol sculpture and the Dorasan shuttle train, with separate entry procedures at Imjingang and Dorasan stations. No photos or video are allowed on the course, drones included, and Paju City can restrict the tunnel for visitors who are elderly, have blood-pressure or breathing conditions, have mobility difficulties or have been drinking. No tour guide is provided: groups arrange their own, and groups of 30 or more come only by 45-seat charter bus. Paju City notes that English service on its tour site is still being prepared.
VisitKorea fills in the sites. The 3rd Tunnel was discovered in 1978 and is 1.6 km long and 2 m wide; VisitKorea lists it as open 09:10–14:40, closed Mondays, weekday public holidays, Seollal and Chuseok. Dora Observatory is the closest DMZ observatory to Panmunjeom, in VisitKorea's words, looking across to North Korean farmland; it is open 10:00–17:00, closed Mondays, and individual visits are not allowed. Dorasan Station is the closest South Korean railway station to North Korea, VisitKorea says, rebuilt in 2002; its page gives the ID check at Imjingang Station closing at 10:20 and the train leaving Imjingang at 11:00.
Two rules sit outside the tour. VisitKorea's 2025 guide says the Peace Gondola accepts a passport or residence card, and a copy or photo as well; that is the gondola's rule, and the DMZ Peace Tour still wants the original. And VisitKorea's DMZ 101 says the JSA at Panmunjeom does not accept non-Korean citizens as of July 2024, with JSA tours run only through agencies approved by the UN Command.
- Tickets only at the Imjingak DMZ Ticket Office, 09:00–14:30, closing early when sold out (Paju City).
- Original ID: passport, alien registration card or US military ID for foreign visitors; no copies, screenshots or expired passports (Paju City).
- Closed Mondays, weekday public holidays, New Year's Day, Seollal and Chuseok (Paju City).
- All tours subject to suspension for security threats, adverse weather or safety issues (Paju City).
- No photos, video or drones on the course; no tour guide provided (Paju City).
- Peace Gondola: a copy or photo of your ID is accepted (VisitKorea, 2025).
- JSA at Panmunjeom: closed to non-Korean citizens as of July 2024 (VisitKorea, DMZ 101).
The Paju Jangdan Bean Festival
Paju City holds the Paju Jangdan Bean Festival at Imjingak from 27 to 29 November 2026, with the opening ceremony at 14:00 on 27 November in Imjingak Square. The three days run from Friday to Sunday, and none of them falls on the DMZ Peace Tour's closing days, so a festival weekend and a morning on the tour fit into one trip.
Stay by Imjingak and Munsan for the festival, and book early for that weekend: the festival and the 09:00 ticket office share the same site.
Onward to Seoul and Incheon Airport
Paju is on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line into Seoul. Munsan to Seoul Station takes about an hour on VisitKorea's 2025 figure, and changing at Hongik Univ. or Gongdeok puts you on AREX for Incheon Airport. For a very late or very early flight, Incheon Airport's night bus N5700 leaves Geumchon Station for the airport at 21:30 and 00:10. See our Seoul guide for the next stop.

Questions visitors ask
Where should I stay in Paju for the DMZ?
In Munsan, by Imjingak. Paju City sells DMZ Peace Tour tickets only at the Imjingak DMZ Ticket Office, from 09:00 to 14:30, to people who are there in person, and closes early once the day's tickets are sold out. Munsan Station is about an hour from Seoul Station on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line and about 13 minutes from Imjingak by taxi, VisitKorea says.
Where should I stay for Heyri and Paju Book City?
In Heyri and Book City themselves, and bring a car. VisitKorea lists free entry and free parking at Heyri Art Valley, and describes Book City as a cultural complex of publishers, printing houses, cafés, museums and bookstores around Munbal-dong, with the Forest of Wisdom at 145 Hoedong-gil. By rail, Heyri's own 2022 guide gives a local bus from Geumchon Station on the Gyeongui Line.
How do I get from Seoul to Imjingak?
Take the Gyeongui–Jungang Line from Seoul Station to Munsan, about one hour by VisitKorea's 2025 figure, then a taxi of about 13 minutes. Community bus 058B takes about 31 minutes, and a few trains a day continue to Imjingang Station at the Imjingak entrance. VisitKorea's bus alternative is route 9710 from the Sungnyemun stop near Seoul Station Exit 3, up to 1 hour 50 minutes.
What ID do I need for the DMZ Peace Tour?
An original, valid passport, alien registration card or US military ID. Paju City refuses copies, screenshots and expired passports, and states that those without ID cannot enter. The Peace Gondola is more relaxed: VisitKorea's 2025 guide says it accepts a copy or photo of your passport or residence card. Carry the original and you are covered for both.
Can foreigners visit the JSA at Panmunjeom?
No. VisitKorea's DMZ 101 says the JSA does not accept non-Korean citizens as of July 2024, and that JSA tours run only through agencies approved by the UN Command. Plan your border day around Paju City's DMZ Peace Tour from Imjingak instead, with the 3rd Tunnel and Dora Observatory on the course.
When is the Paju Jangdan Bean Festival?
From 27 to 29 November 2026 at Imjingak, Paju City says, with the opening ceremony at 14:00 on 27 November in Imjingak Square. The three days run from Friday to Sunday, outside the DMZ Peace Tour's closing days, so stay in Munsan and pair the festival with a morning on the tour.
