Jangseungpo & the East Coast Ports
장승포·지세포
Four of Geoje's seven Oedo docks, the camellia island of Jisimdo and shallow beaches.

The short answer
Stay on the east coast if Oedo is the reason you came. VisitKorea lists seven docks with boats to Oedo, and four of them are here: Jangseungpo, Jisepo, Wahyeon and Gujora. Jangseungpo also runs cruises to Haegeumgang and to Jisimdo, the camellia island about 15 minutes away by ferry, and Jisepo has the passenger terminal for the Haegeumgang and Oedo cruises. VisitKorea's Korean site describes Jangseungpo as the easternmost point of Geoje, with Tsushima in view on clear days.
Jangseungpo has its own intercity bus terminal, so you can skip Gohyeon on arrival: VisitKorea's 2019 figures give about 5 hours 30 minutes from Seoul Nambu and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Gimhae Airport. Gujora and Wahyeon have shallow beaches, and nearby Okpo adds the park for Admiral Yi's first victory and a lit harbour boardwalk. For boats, beaches and camellias, book this coast.

From Gimhae Airport
VisitKorea's 2026 Gimhae Airport guide says you can buy tickets at the airport for intercity buses to Geoje. Its Korean site, in figures updated in 2019, gives the airport bus to Jangseungpo at about 1 hour 10 minutes, with 12 departures a day between 07:55 and 20:35. It is the direct way onto this coast.
From Seoul
Geoje has no railway. VisitKorea's Korean site, in figures updated in 2019, gives about 5 hours 30 minutes from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Jangseungpo, or about 4 hours 20 minutes from Nambu to Gohyeon Bus Terminal, where city buses continue to the east coast: about 56 minutes to Wahyeon.
From Busan
Buses leave Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal for Gohyeon about every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 22:00, about 1 hour 20 minutes by VisitKorea's 2019 figure. From Gohyeon Bus Terminal, city buses run on to the east coast, with Wahyeon about 56 minutes away. By car, the Geoga Bridge has linked Busan and Geoje since 14 December 2010.
On your doorstep
- Oedo Botania A garden island in Hallyeohaesang National Park, 148,760 square metres across Seodo and Dongdo, reached only by boat from one of seven docks. VisitKorea gives visitors two hours on the island.
- Jisimdo About 15 minutes by ferry from Jangseungpo Port, and about two hours to walk the whole island. VisitKorea says it has more old camellia trees than any other island in the southern sea, and its Korean site puts camellias at 60–70% of the forest. Japanese colonial-era fortifications remain, from gun emplacements to a runway.
- Jangseungpo Port A 2.5 km coastal ring road, the Miracle Road walk themed on the Heungnam Evacuation, and the lit Songgu-yeongsin Somang-gil for walks after dark. The port holds a year-end fireworks festival every year.
- Jisepo Port Its name means making the beautiful port known to the world. Jisimdo shelters the harbour mouth, and the wide port serves as a storm refuge. A resort with a waterpark and yacht marina has opened here.
- Geoje Fishing Village Folk Museum At Jisepo, paired with a shipbuilding and marine hall in the Geoje Shipbuilding & Marine Culture Center. The folk museum opens 09:00–18:00, last admission 17:00, and closes on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok.
- Gujora Beach About 1.1 km long and 30 m wide, shallow and warm, and open to the public since the 1970s. Cruises leave Gujora for Haegeumgang, Naedo and Oedo.
- Gujora Fortress and the Sound of the Breeze Path The path runs from Gujora Cruise Ship Dock up to Gujora Fortress past the coast, a bamboo forest and the village; VisitKorea recommends trainers and long trousers. The Joseon-era naval fort stands about 4 m high with an 800 m circuit, 15–20 minutes' walk up from Gujora port.
- Wahyeon Beach A wide, shallow beach backed by pines, busy in summer, and one of VisitKorea's seven Oedo docks.
- Gongot-i A terraced farm in Wahyeon-ri, built up by a local couple, with daffodils in March and April, camellias, a camellia tunnel of 333 steps and about 50 kinds of trees and flowers. It is about 20 minutes' walk from the end of Yegu village.
- Okpo Okpo Great Victory Commemorative Park was built in 1996 for Admiral Yi Sun-sin's first victory, at the Battle of Okpo in the Imjin War, with a memorial tower, Okporu Pavilion over Okpo Bay and a shrine; open 09:00–18:00, closed on Mondays, public holidays, Seollal and Chuseok. Okpo Port's wooden-deck trail runs to Pallangpo village with lit steps, and white-sand Deokpo Beach is close by.
One easy day from here
- Morning Take the ferry from Jangseungpo Port to Jisimdo, about 15 minutes, and walk the island's camellia forest, about two hours end to end.
- Afternoon Sail to Oedo from Jangseungpo, Jisepo, Wahyeon or Gujora, with two hours on the island.
- Late afternoon Walk the Sound of the Breeze Path from Gujora Cruise Ship Dock up to Gujora Fortress, 15–20 minutes from the port.
- Evening Stroll Jangseungpo's lit Songgu-yeongsin Somang-gil, or the lit steps of Okpo Port's boardwalk.
Before you book
- Stay near the dock you will sail from: Jangseungpo, Jisepo, Wahyeon and Gujora all have Oedo boats, and Jisimdo's ferry leaves from Jangseungpo Port.
- Leave a spare day for the sea. VisitKorea's Korean site says boats enter Haegeumgang's Sipja Cave only in calm seas.
- Book early for late February to mid-March, the best time for Jisimdo's camellias according to VisitKorea's Korean site in 2019.
- Arriving from Gimhae Airport or Seoul Nambu? Jangseungpo has its own intercity bus terminal, so you can skip Gohyeon.
- Oedo Botania has no lift and no accessible toilets, a step at the main entrance and no wheelchair or pushchair hire, according to VisitKorea's Korean site.
Questions visitors ask
Which port is best for Oedo?
The one nearest your room. VisitKorea lists seven docks with boats to Oedo: Jangseungpo, Jisepo, Wahyeon, Gujora, Dojangpo, Haegeumgang and Dadae. Four are on this coast, so an east-coast stay puts a boat close by. Jangseungpo adds the Jisimdo ferry, and Gujora's cruises also take in Haegeumgang and Naedo. VisitKorea gives visitors two hours on Oedo itself.
How do I get to Jisimdo?
By ferry from Jangseungpo Port, about 15 minutes, according to VisitKorea. The island takes about two hours to walk end to end. Its camellias start to bloom in early December and have mostly dropped by late April, and VisitKorea's Korean site named late February to mid-March as the best time in 2019.
Can I get to Jangseungpo directly from Seoul or the airport?
Yes. Jangseungpo has its own intercity bus terminal. VisitKorea's Korean site, in figures updated in 2019, gives about 5 hours 30 minutes from Seoul Nambu Terminal and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Gimhae Airport, and VisitKorea's 2026 guide says the airport sells intercity bus tickets to Geoje.
Is Okpo worth a stop?
Yes, for Admiral Yi. Okpo Great Victory Commemorative Park, built in 1996, marks his first victory, at the Battle of Okpo in the Imjin War, with a memorial tower, Okporu Pavilion over Okpo Bay and a shrine; it closes on Mondays and public holidays. Okpo Port's lit wooden-deck trail to Pallangpo makes a good evening walk.
