Where to stay in Danyang
단양 숙소 지역
Danyang is a river county in Chungcheongbuk-do: caves, cliffs and the Namhangang, with Dodamsambong's three rock peaks rising from the water. Stay in Danyang-eup, the county town, where Gosu Cave and the Jando Trail are, and head out from there to Dodamsambong, Mancheonha Skywalk and Sobaeksan. Here is why, and how to plan it.

Why stay the night in Danyang
Danyang's sights are spread across the county, and a night lets you see them without racing for the last train. VisitKorea's Danyang Special Tourist Zone covers the areas around Danyang and Maepo-eup in Danyang-gun, and its list of sights shows the range: Sobaeksan National Park, Dodamsambong Peak, Sainam Rock, Gosu Cave, the Buddhist Museum of the Cheontae Order and Daeseongsan Natural Recreation Forest. VisitKorea's 2024 guide calls Danyang Korea's most famous cave region.
The river ties it together. Danyang Tour says the Namhangang runs through the town centre between the Sangjin and Danyang bridges. Dodamsambong's three stone pillars rise from the water in Maepo-eup, the Jando Trail clings to the cliffs in town, and Mancheonha Skywalk looks down from the cliffs in Jeokseong-myeon.
Evenings are the other reason. VisitKorea's 2024 article says the Jando Trail is lit after dark at weekends, and the town has its riverside and, on dates ending in 1 or 6, the five-day market at Gugyeong Traditional Market, open until 19:00. Stay a Friday or Saturday and you get the lit trail as well as a full day out.
The base: Danyang-eup
Stay in Danyang-eup, the county town. The county office is here, at 10 Jungang 1-ro, and so is the town's own set of sights: Gosu Cave at 8 Gosudonggul-gil, which VisitKorea puts just one kilometre from Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal; the Danyanggang Jando Trail at 31 Sambong-ro; and the Daenuri Center, which VisitKorea's 2021 article places in the centre of Danyang. Danyang Station stands across the river from the Jando Trail, VisitKorea's 2025 article notes.
The big viewpoints are not in town. Dodamsambong is in Maepo-eup, at 644 Sambong-ro; Mancheonha Skywalk is in Jeokseong-myeon, at 94 Aegok-ri; and the northern section of Sobaeksan National Park has its address in Gagok-myeon. Danyang-eup is the base you return to, and the Jando Trail runs from the Sangjin railway bridge to the start of Mancheonha Skywalk, about 1.2 km by VisitKorea's figure.
One night covers the town, Dodamsambong and Mancheonha. Add a second for Sobaeksan, the Ondal Tourist Area or a paragliding flight, and choose a weekend night for the Jando Trail lights.
A good day from Danyang-eup runs like this. Be at Dodamsambong for its 09:00 opening and climb the stairs and path to the Seongmun stone gate for the view down on the three peaks. Come back to town for Gosu Cave, open 09:00–17:00, one kilometre from the bus terminal. In the afternoon, take the free shuttle up to Mancheonha Skywalk, add the zipline or the alpine coaster on any day but Tuesday, and walk back along the Jando Trail towards the Sangjin railway bridge. On a weekend, stay out for the trail's lights; on a market day, fit in Gugyeong Traditional Market before it closes at 19:00.
Book with the timetable in mind. VisitKorea's December 2021 article counted nine KTX trains a day from Cheongnyangni, the last at 20:30, so plan your nights around the train. The buses from Dong Seoul are more frequent, about 12 a day by VisitKorea's 2025 count.
- In Danyang-eup: Gosu Cave, the Jando Trail, the Daenuri Center and the county office.
- In Maepo-eup: Dodamsambong and the Seongmun stone gate.
- In Jeokseong-myeon: Mancheonha Skywalk, its zipline and its alpine coaster.
- In Gagok-myeon: the northern section of Sobaeksan National Park.
Getting to Danyang
From Seoul, take the train. Korail's release of 28 December 2020 announced the new KTX on the Jungang Line between Cheongnyangni and Andong and listed Danyang among its stops. VisitKorea's article with information from December 2021 gives nine trains a day between Cheongnyangni and Danyang, the first at 06:00 and the last at 20:30, taking 1 hour 20 minutes. Its January 2025 article lists nine Mugunghwa and Saemaeul trains a day, taking about 2 hours 15 minutes. Danyang-gun's own travel page lists the route as Cheongnyangni Station to Danyang Station.
By bus, Danyang-gun lists the route from Dong Seoul Terminal to Danyang. VisitKorea's December 2021 article gave six buses a day taking 2 hours 5 minutes; its January 2025 article gives about 12 a day, between 07:00 and 18:00, taking about 2.5 hours. The buses arrive at Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal, one kilometre from Gosu Cave.
From Incheon Airport, ride AREX into Seoul: VisitKorea puts the express train at about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station. Then take the KTX from Cheongnyangni or the bus from Dong Seoul.
In town, VisitKorea's 2025 article sends you by bus from the terminal to the stop in front of the Danyang County Health Center for the Jando Trail. For Mancheonha Skywalk, buy tickets at the ticket office and ride the free shuttle bus up, VisitKorea's 2024 article says.
- Cheongnyangni to Danyang: nine KTX a day, 1 h 20 min (VisitKorea, December 2021); nine Mugunghwa and Saemaeul trains a day, about 2 h 15 min (VisitKorea, January 2025).
- Dong Seoul to Danyang by bus: six a day, 2 h 5 min (VisitKorea, December 2021); about 12 a day, about 2.5 h (VisitKorea, January 2025).
- Incheon Airport: AREX to Seoul Station, about 43 min from Terminal 1 (VisitKorea), then train or bus.
- Jando Trail: bus from the terminal to the Danyang County Health Center stop (VisitKorea, 2025).
In town: Gosu Cave, the Jando Trail and the river
Gosu Cave is the town's headline. VisitKorea says it is recognised as a Natural Monument of Korea and is conveniently located just one kilometre from Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal; it is open 09:00–17:00, all year. Arriving by bus, make it your first sight.
The Danyanggang Jando Trail follows the Namhangang cliffs with what Danyang Tour calls a bird's-eye view of the river landscape. Danyang Tour gives its length as 1.12 km; VisitKorea's 2025 article gives about 1.2 km from the Sangjin railway bridge to the start of Mancheonha Skywalk, around 20 m above the river. Its 2024 article says the trail is lit at night at weekends only.
The Daenuri Center, a culture complex in the centre of Danyang, has an aquarium, a fishing museum, an otter hall, a library and a 4D theatre; VisitKorea's 2021 article lists it as open 09:00–18:00, with tickets until 17:00, and closed on Mondays. Gugyeong Traditional Market, at 31 Dojeon 5-gil, is open from sunrise to 19:00 all year, and VisitKorea's 2023 listing says the Danyang five-day market, the largest of the three in the county, is held there on dates ending in 1 or 6.
In late spring, VisitKorea's 2024 article describes about 1.2 km of rose tunnel at Sogeumjeong Park, from Danyang High School to the Sangjin riverside, in bloom from mid-May to mid-June. And in summer, when the water is high, Danyang Tour says large boats run from the marina in the town centre.
Outside town: Dodamsambong, Mancheonha and Sobaeksan
Dodamsambong, in Maepo-eup, is a group of three stone pillars, Janggunbong, Cheobong and Cheopbong, rising from the Namhangang, with Samdojeong Pavilion on Janggunbong. Danyang-gun lists it first of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang. VisitKorea lists the Sambong Story Hall, a hwangpo sailboat and a cruise quay in the tourist area, open 09:00–18:00, all year. About 200 m upstream, in Danyang-gun's words, stands Seongmun, a long, rainbow-shaped stone gate; VisitKorea's 2024 article says it is reached by stairs and a mountain path from the Dodamsambong area and looks down on the peaks and the river.
Mancheonha Skywalk, in Jeokseong-myeon, is a horseshoe-shaped observation deck with a glass skywalk high above the Namhangang cliffs, and VisitKorea's 2025 guide adds a zipline and a 960 m alpine coaster. VisitKorea's 2024 article says to buy tickets at the ticket office and take the free shuttle bus up. The hours differ by source: Danyang Tour gives 09:00–18:00 in summer and 09:00–17:00 in winter; VisitKorea's 2025 guide gives Wednesday to Monday, 09:00–17:00; and its 2024 article says the skywalk opens daily while the activities close on Tuesdays. Avoid Tuesdays and you are covered either way.
For paragliding, Danyang Tour places the paragliding and hang-gliding launch at the Yangbangsan Paragliding Site in Danyang-eup, while VisitKorea's 2025 guide describes tandem flights with a professional in Gagok-myeon, near the Namhangang.
Sobaeksan National Park's northern section has its address in Gagok-myeon; VisitKorea says the park was designated in 1987 and gives Birobong as 1,439 m. The Ondal Tourist Area in Yeongchun-myeon, with Ondalsanseong Fortress, Ondal Cave and a drama set, is open 09:00–18:00 from March to November and 09:00–17:00 from December to February, all year, by VisitKorea's 2021 article.
Seasons, festivals and market days
Late May to June is Danyang's flower season. Danyang Tour lists the Sobaeksan Azalea Festival in late May to early June, at Byeolgok-ri in Danyang-eup, and the Sogeumjeong rose tunnel blooms from mid-May to mid-June. Book early for those weeks.
Summer is the season for the river: Danyang Tour says the large boats from the town-centre marina run only in summer, when the water is high, and Mancheonha keeps its longer summer hours, to 18:00 by Danyang Tour's figures. In winter, by the same figures, the skywalk closes at 17:00, and VisitKorea's 2021 article has the Ondal Tourist Area closing at 17:00 from December to February.
All year, plan around two rhythms: the five-day market at Gugyeong Traditional Market on dates ending in 1 or 6, and the Jando Trail lights at weekends only.
Week by week, two closures matter. Mancheonha's zipline and coaster close on Tuesdays, by VisitKorea's 2024 article, and its 2025 guide lists the skywalk itself as open Wednesday to Monday; the Daenuri Center closes on Mondays, by VisitKorea's 2021 article. Gosu Cave, Dodamsambong and the Ondal Tourist Area are listed as open all year, so a Monday or Tuesday still makes a full day: the cave, the peaks and the Seongmun stone gate, with the Jando Trail in town.
- Mid-May to mid-June: the Sogeumjeong Park rose tunnel (VisitKorea, 2024).
- Late May to early June: the Sobaeksan Azalea Festival at Byeolgok-ri (Danyang Tour).
- Summer: large boats from the town-centre marina when the water is high (Danyang Tour).
- Every month: the five-day market on dates ending in 1 or 6; the Jando Trail lights on weekend nights.
Onward to Andong and Daejeon
Danyang sits on the Jungang Line. Korail's December 2020 release lists Danyang and Andong as stops on the same Cheongnyangni–Andong KTX, so the train carries you straight on to Andong; see our Andong guide for where to stay there. Danyang-gun's travel page also gives a rail route from Daejeon Station, changing trains once on the way to Danyang Station, and a bus route from Daejeon with a change on the way, for travellers coming from Daejeon.
Travelling the other way, from Andong towards Seoul, the same KTX stops at Danyang before Cheongnyangni, which makes Danyang a natural night between the two. Get off at Danyang Station, across the river from the Jando Trail, spend the night in Danyang-eup, and ride the KTX on to Cheongnyangni the next day.
