Myeongdong & Chuncheon Station
춘천 명동·춘천역
Chuncheon's downtown: the dakgalbi alley, a covered 1960 market and the river skywalk.

The short answer
Stay downtown, between Chuncheon Station and Myeongdong, for your first night in Chuncheon. Myeongdong Street, named after Seoul's Myeong-dong, is the city's main thoroughfare in VisitKorea's words, and it leads to the two places to eat and shop: Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street, a 150-metre alley packed with dakgalbi restaurants on both sides, and Jungang Market, now also called the Romantic Market, a covered arcade established in 1960. VisitKorea calls Chuncheon the birthplace and the epicentre of dakgalbi, and this alley is the place to eat it.
The river is the other half. VisitKorea's 2019 Korean guide puts the Soyang River Maiden statue about 1.2 km, or 20 minutes on foot, from Chuncheon Station, with the glass-floored Soyanggang Skywalk beside it. Gongjicheon Stream and its sculpture park are about four minutes from the station by taxi, by VisitKorea's 2016 figure, with Kangwon National University's main gate close by. And Chuncheon Station is where the ITX-Cheongchun and the Gyeongchun Line end and the free LEGOLAND shuttle leaves from Exit 1.

Getting here
| Station | Lines |
|---|---|
| Chuncheon Station | ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan and Cheongnyangni; about 1 h 13–15 min from Yongsan (LEGOLAND) |
| Chuncheon Station | Gyeongchun Line from Sangbong, about 1 h 25 min (VisitKorea, 2019) |
| Chuncheon Station, Exit 1 | Free LEGOLAND shuttle to the park entrance, every hour from 09:30 (LEGOLAND) |
| Chuncheon Express Bus Terminal | Express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal, about 1 h 30 min (LEGOLAND) |
From Seoul by ITX-Cheongchun
Take the ITX-Cheongchun, which VisitKorea describes as a train with a maximum speed of 180 km/h running from Yongsan Station to Chuncheon. LEGOLAND's pages put the ride from Yongsan at about 1 hour 13 to 15 minutes, and its FAQ names Cheongnyangni as the other boarding station in Seoul. Korail calls it Korea's only double-decker train, with cars 4 and 5 on two levels. Chuncheon Station is the end of the line.
From Seoul by metro
VisitKorea calls Chuncheon the only city in Gangwon that can be reached by subway from Seoul. The Gyeongchun Line runs to Chuncheon Station, and VisitKorea's 2019 Korean guide gives about 1 hour 25 minutes from Sangbong, with weekend trains every 35 minutes. It is slower than the ITX-Cheongchun, and it arrives at the same station.
From Seoul by bus
Express buses run from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station, Lines 3, 7 and 9) to Chuncheon Express Bus Terminal in about 1 hour 30 minutes, LEGOLAND's FAQ says. VisitKorea's bus guide also lists Chuncheon among the routes from Dong Seoul Terminal at Gangbyeon Station (Line 2).
From Incheon Airport
VisitKorea's airport guide lists express buses from Incheon Airport to Gangwon State, and the AREX runs from the airport to Seoul Station. By rail, ride the AREX to Seoul Station, cross the city to Yongsan or Cheongnyangni, and take the ITX-Cheongchun to Chuncheon Station, about 1 hour 13 to 15 minutes from Yongsan by LEGOLAND's figures.
On your doorstep
- Myeongdong Street Chuncheon's main thoroughfare, named after Seoul's Myeong-dong, VisitKorea says: a shopping street for young people that links to Yungnimgogae Pass and leads into the dakgalbi alley and Jungang Market. VisitKorea's 2024 Hallyu guide notes it was a filming location for Winter Sonata.
- Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street A 150-metre alley packed with dakgalbi restaurants on both sides. It grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, VisitKorea says, and was a filming location for Infinite Challenge.
- Jungang Market (Romantic Market) Established in 1960, and listed by VisitKorea as both Chuncheon Jungang Market and the Chuncheon Romantic Market. A covered arcade that works in any weather, with murals and sculptures in its alleys and stalls selling hanbok, clothing and household goods, at 34 Myeongdong-gil. VisitKorea's 2024 Hallyu guide notes it featured in I Live Alone.
- Soyanggang Skywalk A walkway 174 metres long with a transparent glass floor over 156 metres, ending in an observatory known for panoramic views, especially at sunset. VisitKorea lists it as open 10:00–21:00 from March to October and 10:00–18:00 from November to February, and it is subject to closure in bad weather.
- Soyang River Maiden statue VisitKorea's Statue of Soyanggang Maiden stands between the Soyanggang Skywalk and Soyang 2-gyo Bridge: 12 metres in all, a 7-metre figure on a 5-metre base, for the song Soyanggang Cheonyeo. It is open 24 hours, about 1.2 km from Chuncheon Station on foot (VisitKorea Korean guide, 2019).
- Gongjicheon Stream The stream joins the Bukhangang River in the middle of the city, and VisitKorea calls it a shelter in the middle of Chuncheon, with a sculpture park, fountain, boat dock, outdoor stage and playground, open 24 hours at 25 Ethiopia-gil. The sculpture park, originally named Gongji Park, has collected sculptures since 1997 and added a water clock in 2001.
- Kangwon National University The main gate of the Chuncheon campus is close to Gongjicheon Stream, and VisitKorea's 2024 guide suggests a walk through the campus or along the stream.
- Chuncheon National Museum Opened in 2002, it covers Gangwon's history from prehistoric times, and its main building was named Best Architecture of the Year in 2003. At 70 Useok-ro; open 09:00–18:00, closed on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok.
- Soyang Dam and Cheongpyeongsa The half-day trip north of the city. Soyang Dam, built in 1973, formed Soyangho Lake, and boats from the pier near the dam cross the lake to Cheongpyeongsa, a temple founded as Baegamseonwon in 973 on Obongsan Mountain, with a Goryeo-era pond still in its original form, VisitKorea says.
- Chuncheon Makguksu Museum A museum to buckwheat noodles, Chuncheon's local dish, at 264 Sinbuk-ro in Sinbuk-eup, the same district as Soyang Dam: an exhibition hall on the first floor and hands-on noodle making on the second. Open 10:00–17:00, programmes 10:00–16:30; closed on Mondays, Seollal and Chuseok.
One easy day from here
- Morning Take the ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan to Chuncheon Station, about 1 hour 15 minutes by LEGOLAND's figure, and leave your bags.
- Late morning Walk about 1.2 km, 20 minutes by VisitKorea's 2019 Korean guide, to the Soyang River Maiden statue and the Soyanggang Skywalk, which opens at 10:00.
- Lunch Dakgalbi in the 150-metre alley off Myeongdong Street.
- Afternoon Jungang Market's covered arcade, then a taxi to Gongjicheon Stream and its sculpture park. On any day but Monday, add Chuncheon National Museum.
- Evening Back to the Skywalk for sunset: it is open until 21:00 from March to October and until 18:00 from November to February.
Before you book
- Travelling without a car? Book close to Chuncheon Station. The ITX-Cheongchun and the Gyeongchun Line both end there, and the free LEGOLAND shuttle leaves from Exit 1 every hour, so the whole trip runs from one station.
- The last week of May is Mime Festival week. VisitKorea says the festival is held every year then, and in 2026 it ran from 24 to 31 May at Festival Theater MIME, 112 Chuncheon-ro, and venues across the city. Book early for that week.
- The Makguksu & Dakgalbi Festival ran from 14 to 18 October in 2026, on the streamside between Hyojagyo and Gongjigyo bridges; book early for festival week.
- Winter evenings on the river are short: the Soyanggang Skywalk closes at 18:00 from November to February, so plan sunset before dinner.
- For Gubongsan Café Street, east of the centre, take a taxi: VisitKorea's 2024 Hallyu guide says public transport there is difficult and recommends the tourist taxi for foreigners, booked through the Chuncheon Tourist Information Center (+82-33-250-3896).
Questions visitors ask
Is downtown Chuncheon a good base for a first visit?
Yes. Chuncheon Station is the end of the line for the ITX-Cheongchun and the Gyeongchun Line, the free LEGOLAND shuttle leaves from Exit 1, and Myeongdong Street, the dakgalbi alley and the covered Jungang Market are the old centre. It is the easiest base in the city.
Where is Chuncheon's famous dakgalbi street?
Off Myeongdong Street in the centre: Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street is a 150-metre alley packed with dakgalbi restaurants on both sides, which grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, VisitKorea says. Its 2025 food guide also names the Namchuncheon Station intersection and the commercial area near Soyang Dam as dakgalbi areas.
Can I walk from Chuncheon Station to the Soyanggang Skywalk?
Yes. VisitKorea's 2019 Korean guide gives about 1.2 km, about 20 minutes on foot, from Chuncheon Station to the Soyang River Maiden statue, which stands beside the Skywalk.
How do I get to Cheongpyeongsa from downtown?
Go to Soyang Dam, then cross the lake by boat: VisitKorea says boats from the pier near the dam run to Cheongpyeongsa as well as around the lake. VisitKorea's 2016 Korean guide listed city buses from Chuncheon Station to the dam. By car, VisitKorea's accessible-travel page puts the temple about 2 km from its car park, with stairs on site. Add the Makguksu Museum in Sinbuk-eup on the way back, except on Mondays.
