The short answer

Stay by KTX Ulsan Station if your trip runs on fast trains and on Ulju-gun's mountains and history. The KTX from Seoul Station and the SRT from Suseo stop here, and all five limousine routes on Ulsan City's 2021 list run from the station into the city. Eonyang has a walled town, first built with earthen fortifications in 1390, and its own bulgogi: thin-sliced marinated beef grilled on a net, VisitKorea explains, unlike Seoul-style bulgogi cooked with broth. The Yeongnam Alps, peaks over 1,000 m centred on Gajisan, turn silver with grass every autumn.

Ulju-gun also holds Ulsan's World Heritage site. On 12 July 2025 UNESCO inscribed the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream, two rock panels at Daegok-ri and Cheonjeon-ri carved, in UNESCO's words, from 5,000 BCE to the 9th century CE, with images of whales and certain stages of whaling. VisitKorea places the Daegok-ri panel in Eonyang-eup. This is car country: drive or take a taxi to the petroglyphs and the Alps.

Best for

  • Early and late KTX or SRT trains
  • The Bangucheon petroglyphs
  • Silver grass and hiking in the Yeongnam Alps
  • Eonyang bulgogi
  • The Ulju Mountain Film Festival in September

Think twice if

  • Sightseeing without a car
  • Beach days
  • Evenings in the old downtown
  • Arriving by the Donghae Line metro, which ends at Taehwagang

From Seoul

Take the KTX from Seoul Station or the SRT from Suseo. Ulsan City's 2021 timetable has the first southbound KTX leaving Seoul at 5:15 and reaching Ulsan at 7:29, and the last leaving at 22:30 and arriving at 0:42. Heading back, its last train left Ulsan at 23:23 for Suseo, arriving at 1:19. A stay by the station makes those first and last trains easy.

From Busan

Take KTX-Eum (about 40 minutes, VisitKorea 2026) or the Donghae Line metro (76 minutes, Busan City 2022) from Bujeon to Taehwagang Station, then limousine 5001, which runs between Taehwagang Station and KTX Ulsan Station every 20 minutes on Ulsan City's 2021 list.

From Gimhae Airport

VisitKorea's 2026 Gimhae Airport guide says you can buy tickets at the airport for intercity buses to Ulsan. By rail, go through Bujeon to Taehwagang Station and take limousine 5001 (Ulsan City's 2021 list) to KTX Ulsan Station. For the petroglyphs and the Alps, driving from the airport saves the transfers.

From Ulsan Airport

Limousine 5005 on Ulsan City's 2021 list calls at Ulsan Airport, at 1103 Saneop-ro in Buk-gu, and runs to KTX Ulsan Station every 30 minutes, 04:05–24:00. The same 2021 page lists flights of about an hour from Gimpo.

Questions visitors ask

When did the Bangucheon petroglyphs become World Heritage?

On 12 July 2025, at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, by decision 47 COM 8B.20, as the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the property's two parts are the Daegok-ri and Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs in Ulju, Ulsan, and noted in July 2025 that this brought Korea's World Heritage properties to 17.

How old are the Bangucheon petroglyphs, and what do they show?

UNESCO dates them from 5,000 BCE to the 9th century CE. Its first criterion highlights prehistoric images of whales and certain stages of whaling, and Korea's culture ministry webzine adds finback and gray whales and the people hunting them. The Ulsan Petroglyph Museum has life-size models of both panels.

What is Eonyang bulgogi?

Eonyang's own bulgogi: thinly sliced beef marinated in seasoning and grilled on a roasting net, VisitKorea explains, unlike Seoul bulgogi, which is cooked with broth. Ulsan City calls it so sweet and tender that it melts in your mouth, served, Ulsan City says, with water dropwort, another Eonyang speciality.

What are the Yeongnam Alps?

A range of mountains over 1,000 m centred on Gajisan, joined by nine mountains including Sinbulsan and spanning Ulsan, Miryang, Yangsan, Cheongdo and Gyeongju, says VisitKorea. Every autumn they are covered with silver grass. The Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center in Sangbuk-myeon is the place to start.

A place before a plan.
