Mireukdo
미륵도
Tongyeong's resort island: the cable car, the luge, the concert hall and Dara Park.

The short answer
Stay on Mireukdo for the cable car, the luge and the sea views. VisitKorea lists the island as the Mireukdo Island Special Tourist Zone, part of Hallyeohaesang National Park and joined to the city by an undersea tunnel, Chungmu Bridge and Tongyeong Bridge. Its Donam Tourist Complex gathers accommodation, restaurants, yacht services and water sports, and Mireuksan rises in the middle, with hiking trails and the Tongyeong Cable Car, 1,975 m long, which lifts you to just below the 461-metre summit.
Opposite the cable car's lower station, Skyline Luge runs four tracks, 3.8 km in all, and Tongyeong Concert Hall sits right above the sea in Donam-dong. Dara Park, in the south of the island, is the sunset spot. The trade-off: Jungang Market, the harbour evenings and the island ferries are back in the city. City bus 141 runs from the bus terminal to the cable car in about 20 minutes in smooth traffic.

From Seoul (bus)
Tongyeong has no railway. Tongyeong City lists the nonstop bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal at 4 hours 10 minutes, and VisitKorea's Korean site, updated in 2025, gives about four hours by express bus from Seoul. At Tongyeong Bus Terminal, take city bus 141 to the stop in front of the cable car, about 20 minutes in smooth traffic.
From Busan and Gimhae Airport
Intercity buses run from Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal to Tongyeong Bus Terminal: about 80 minutes in VisitKorea's 2026 guide, 2 hours 10 minutes for the nonstop on Tongyeong City's 2016 English site. From Gimhae Airport, VisitKorea's advice is to go to Busan Seobu first, about 15 minutes by subway or taxi. Then take city bus 141 from the Tongyeong terminal to the cable car.
From Tongyeong Bus Terminal
City bus 141 runs to the Cable Car Platform stop, the closest to the luge; city bus 101 stops about five minutes' walk away, and Skyline Luge's site puts either ride at about 20 minutes in smooth traffic. For the Concert Hall, VisitKorea's Korean site gives buses 101, 121 and 128 to the Donam-dong stop, then about 590 m on foot. By taxi, the cable car is about 20 minutes away.
On your doorstep
- Tongyeong Cable Car A bi-cable gondola of 48 cabins, 1,975 m long, opened in 2008, with a ride of about nine minutes on VisitKorea's figure and pets allowed. Open 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:00 at weekends, with the last ticket 50 minutes before closing; closed on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, and hours change with the weather.
- Mireuksan summit From the upper station, a 15-minute climb on wooden stairs and decks reaches the 461-metre summit; VisitKorea says the ride itself looks over Hallyeohaesang National Park and Tongyeong Harbour. VisitKorea's Korean site notes a Tsushima observatory at the upper station: on clear days, Tsushima is in sight.
- Skyline Luge Tongyeong Four tracks, 3.8 km in all, opposite the cable car on Balgae-ro, with a chairlift, the Skyride, back to the top. Opened in 2017, and called Korea's first luge facility by VisitKorea's Korean site. Open all year, 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 10:00–18:00 at weekends.
- Undersea Tunnel Built over 16 months in 1931–1932, 483 m long and 5 m wide, and open 24 hours. VisitKorea's Korean site calls it Korea's first undersea tunnel. The city-side entrance, at 1 Docheon 1-gil, has a tourist information centre.
- Dara Park In the south of Mireukdo, the island's sunset spot, with Gwanhaejeong Pavilion looking out over Hallyeohaesang National Park. VisitKorea's Korean site suggests arriving about 30 minutes before sunset.
- Tongyeong Concert Hall 1,309 seats, right above the sea in Donam-dong, near the cruise terminal and yacht marina. It opened in 2014.
- Pak Kyongni Memorial Hall In Sanyang-eup, honouring the Tongyeong-born novelist with letters and manuscripts of Toji; her grave is in Pak Kyongni Park. Open 09:00–18:00, closed on Mondays and the day after public holidays, and about 15 minutes by car from the city centre.
- Jeon Hyuck Lim Museum of Art On the way to Yonghwasa Temple on Mireuksan, in the painter's home of about 30 years. Opened in 2003, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Miraesa and its cypress forest On Mireuksan's southern slope, a 20–30 minute walk from the cable car's upper station on a rough trail, according to VisitKorea's Korean site.
One easy day from here
- Morning Ride the cable car up Mireuksan, avoiding the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, and climb 15 minutes to the 461-metre summit.
- Midday Walk down to Miraesa's cypress forest, 20–30 minutes from the upper station, or ride back down and take the luge opposite the lower station.
- Afternoon Visit the Jeon Hyuck Lim Museum of Art, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, or drive out to the Pak Kyongni Memorial Hall in Sanyang-eup, closed on Mondays.
- Sunset Be at Dara Park about 30 minutes before sunset for the view from Gwanhaejeong Pavilion.
- Evening Catch a concert at Tongyeong Concert Hall, or visit the 1932 undersea tunnel, open 24 hours.
Before you book
- Avoid the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month for the cable car: it is closed those days, and the last ticket is sold 50 minutes before closing.
- Stay here for the cable car and the luge: they stand opposite each other on Balgae-ro, and city bus 141 from the bus terminal stops in front of the cable car.
- Use a car or taxi for Sanyang-eup. Dara Park is in the south of the island and the Pak Kyongni Memorial Hall about 15 minutes by car from the city centre.
- Book early around concert dates. The Tongyeong International Music Festival is held each spring, and TIMF lists the final round of the ISANGYUN Competition 2026 on 7 November 2026 at 15:00.
- Wear shoes for stairs: the last stretch from the upper station to the summit is a 15-minute climb on wooden stairs and decks.
Questions visitors ask
I'm arriving by bus — where do I stay?
If the cable car and luge are your plan, stay on Mireukdo: city bus 141 runs from Tongyeong Bus Terminal to the stop in front of the cable car, about 20 minutes in smooth traffic by Skyline Luge's figure. If you want the market, the night views and the island ferries, stay at Gangguan, about 5.9 km from the terminal by taxi. Tongyeong has no railway, so every bus trip starts and ends at the terminal in Jukrim.
How long is the cable car, and how far is the summit?
The cable car is 1,975 m long, and VisitKorea gives the ride as about nine to ten minutes. It takes you just below the summit of Mireuksan, 461 m; from the upper station a 15-minute climb on wooden stairs and decks reaches the top. It is closed on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.
Is the luge next to the cable car?
Yes. Skyline Luge Tongyeong, at 178 Balgae-ro, stands across from the cable car, and city bus 141 stops at the Cable Car Platform stop, the closest to the luge. It opened in 2017, which VisitKorea's Korean site calls Korea's first luge facility, and runs four tracks totalling 3.8 km. It is open all year, 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 10:00–18:00 at weekends.
Is Mireukdo really an island?
Yes. VisitKorea lists it as part of Hallyeohaesang National Park, joined to the city by an undersea tunnel, Chungmu Bridge and Tongyeong Bridge. The tunnel, built in 1931–1932, is 483 m long and open 24 hours, and its city-side entrance is at 1 Docheon 1-gil, beside a tourist information centre.
