The short answer

Stay in Cheongpyeong for the lake. VisitKorea describes Cheongpyeong Lake as an artificial lake formed when Cheongpyeong Dam was built on the Bukhangang River, with water-skiing, motor boats, jet skis and banana boats, and 30 boating areas around it. Gapyeong County puts Cheongpyeong Lakeside first among its Eight Scenes and says people come for summer holidays and all year round. On Homyeongsan Mountain, Homyeonghosu Lake Park has walking trails around a lake of its own, open 24 hours, all year.

Petite France and the Italian Village, two theme villages at 1063 Hoban-ro, Cheongpyeong-myeon, are the other draw, both open 09:00–18:00, all year. Be clear about the trade-off: this is the quieter base, with thinner transport. Cheongpyeong Station is on the Gyeongchun Line, only some ITX-Cheongchun trains stop here (VisitKorea's Korean guide, 2019), and the villages are a ride on bus 30-5. For Nami Island and Jarasum, Gapyeong town is better placed.

Best for

  • Water sports on Cheongpyeong Lake in summer
  • Petite France and the Italian Village
  • Lakeside walking at Homyeonghosu Lake Park
  • A quieter stay by the water

Think twice if

  • Nami Island at opening or closing time
  • Jarasum and the jazz festival
  • Fast trains: only some ITX-Cheongchun services stop at Cheongpyeong
  • Sightseeing without buses or taxis

From Seoul by train

Take the Gyeongchun Line to Cheongpyeong Station; Gapyeong County's directions are simply to get off at Cheongpyeong. In VisitKorea's 2024 directions, the Gyeongchun Line runs from Sangbong, on Seoul's Line 7. VisitKorea's Korean guide (2019) adds that some ITX-Cheongchun trains from Yongsan and Cheongnyangni stop at Cheongpyeong depending on the time of day, so the Gyeongchun Line is the one to plan on.

From Seoul by bus

VisitKorea's Korean guide (December 2024) gives about nine buses a day from Dong Seoul to Cheongpyeong, taking about an hour. From Cheongpyeong Terminal, bus 30-5 runs to the Petite France stop.

From Incheon Airport

Incheon Airport's list of late-night buses to Gyeonggi has no Gapyeong route, so go by rail: AREX to Seoul Station, about 43 minutes on the Express or 59 minutes on the All-Stop from Terminal 1 (VisitKorea, 2026), then the subway to Sangbong for the Gyeongchun Line to Cheongpyeong.

From Cheongpyeong Station to the villages

VisitKorea's Korean guide (December 2024): walk about 15 minutes to the Cheongpyeong NH bus stop, take bus 30-5 to the Petite France stop, then walk about 15 minutes to the Italian Village. The same guide notes that the county's sightseeing loop bus, running since 1 January 2023, includes the Italian Village.

On your doorstep

  • Cheongpyeong Lake An artificial lake formed by the building of Cheongpyeong Dam on the Bukhangang River, in VisitKorea's description, with water-skiing, motor boats, jet skis and banana boats, and 30 boating areas around the lake. Gapyeong County lists Cheongpyeong Lakeside first among its Eight Scenes.
  • Homyeonghosu Lake Park On Homyeongsan Mountain, with walking trails around the lake, VisitKorea says, at 77 Sangji-ro 64beon-gil, Cheongpyeong-myeon. Open 24 hours, all year. Homyeong Lake is no. 2 of the county's Eight Scenes.
  • Petite France A French cultural village set in the Korean countryside, in VisitKorea's words, themed on flowers, stars and The Little Prince, with a Saint-Exupéry memorial hall and an Orgel House. At 1063 Hoban-ro, Cheongpyeong-myeon; open 09:00–18:00, all year. A VisitKorea course lists it as a K-drama filming location.
  • Gapyeong Italian Village, Pinocchio and Da Vinci A theme park that introduces Italian culture under the themes of Pinocchio and Leonardo da Vinci, VisitKorea says. It shares Petite France's address, 1063 Hoban-ro, and VisitKorea's Korean guide calls it Petite France's sister village, about 33,000 m². Open 09:00–18:00, all year.
  • Chuknyeong-baekrim A Korean white-pine forest on Chuknyeongsan in Haenghyeon-ri, Sang-myeon, no. 7 of the Eight Scenes of Gapyeong. The county's directions are a train or bus to Cheongpyeong, and it closes the forest to visitors during specified periods.
  • The Garden of Morning Calm An arboretum in Sang-myeon with 20 themed gardens in VisitKorea's description, on the county's sightseeing loop bus, which also stops at Cheongpyeong Station.
  • Gapyeong town and Nami Island Up the line at Gapyeong Station, 1.5 km from the Nami Island wharf on Nami Island's figure, with Jarasum and the Gapyeong Rail Park in the same town.

One easy day from here

  1. Morning Bus 30-5 from Cheongpyeong Terminal or the Cheongpyeong NH stop to Petite France and the Italian Village, both open from 09:00.
  2. Afternoon In summer, water sports on Cheongpyeong Lake; the rest of the year, the trails around the lake at Homyeonghosu Lake Park, open 24 hours.
  3. Late afternoon Take the county loop bus from Cheongpyeong Station to the Garden of Morning Calm, or the Gyeongchun Line up to Gapyeong Station for Jarasum.
  4. Evening Back to Cheongpyeong for a quiet night by the lake.

Before you book

  • Without a car, plan around bus 30-5 and the county loop bus, and allow for walks of about 15 minutes at both ends of the trip to the villages (VisitKorea's Korean guide, December 2024).
  • Only some ITX-Cheongchun trains stop at Cheongpyeong (VisitKorea's Korean guide, 2019). The Gyeongchun Line is the line to plan on.
  • Petite France and the Italian Village share one address, 1063 Hoban-ro, and both open 09:00–18:00, all year. Plan them as one stop.
  • The lake is a summer draw: Gapyeong County says people come to Cheongpyeong Lake for summer holidays, though it sees visitors all year round.
  • For Nami Island at opening time, stay in Gapyeong town instead: the wharf is 1.5 km from Gapyeong Station (Nami Island's official site).

Questions visitors ask

How do I get to Petite France from Seoul?

Take the Gyeongchun Line to Cheongpyeong Station, walk about 15 minutes to the Cheongpyeong NH bus stop and take bus 30-5 to the Petite France stop. Or take one of the roughly nine daily buses from Dong Seoul to Cheongpyeong, about an hour, and bus 30-5 from the terminal. Both routes come from VisitKorea's Korean guide of December 2024.

Are Petite France and the Italian Village the same place?

No, but they share an address, 1063 Hoban-ro, Cheongpyeong-myeon, and VisitKorea's Korean guide calls them sister villages. Petite France is themed on France and The Little Prince; the Italian Village on Pinocchio and Leonardo da Vinci. Both are open 09:00–18:00, all year, so plan them as one visit.

Is Cheongpyeong a good base for Nami Island?

Not the best one. The Nami Island wharf is 1.5 km from Gapyeong Station, Nami Island's official site says, so Gapyeong town is the base for the first and last ferries. Cheongpyeong is the base for the lake, Homyeonghosu Lake Park and the two theme villages.

What can you do on Cheongpyeong Lake?

Water sports. VisitKorea lists water-skiing, motor boats, jet skis and banana boats, with 30 boating areas around the lake, which formed when Cheongpyeong Dam was built on the Bukhangang River. Gapyeong County says the lake draws people for summer holidays and visitors all year round.
