Where to stay in Daegu

대구 숙소 지역

Daegu rewards a night or two: a Joseon-era market with a weekend night market, alleys of modern history around Gyesan Cathedral, a centuries-old herbal medicine street, and Palgongsan, a national park since December 2023. You have two bases: the old downtown around Dongseongno, and Dongdaegu Station, the KTX hub. Here is the quick answer for each trip, then everything behind it.

Why stay the night in Daegu

Start with the markets. KTO's 2023 page calls Seomun Market one of the three major markets of the Joseon dynasty, and its 2024 guide calls it one of the largest traditional markets in Korea. On the 2023 page, its night market runs on Friday and Saturday evenings, 19:00–23:30, and on Sunday, 19:00–22:30, and both pages close the market on the first and third Sunday of each month. Also in Jung-gu, Yangnyeongsi is, in KTO's 2024 words, a specialised market for medicinal herbs with 350 years of history; KTO's 2026 festival page gives it a 367-year history. KTO's Korean course page counts about 170 herbal shops on the street where the Joseon-era herb market was held.

Then the alleys. KTO's modern-history course covers about 1.32 km of the downtown, through what it calls the modern culture and history of Daegu: Cheongna Hill, the 90 stairs of the March 1st Independence Movement Road, Gyesan Cathedral, the poet Yi Sang-hwa's last home and the Yangnyeongsi museum. KTO's Korean listing says the Modern Culture Alley was named a Star of Korean Tourism in 2012 and listed in the Korea Tourism 100 three years running. Kim Kwangseok-gil, a 350 m wall of murals and statues for the singer who lived in the neighbourhood, is open 24 hours, and Dongseong-ro, Daegu's main downtown area in KTO's words, has the department stores and the shops.

And Daegu is a rail hub. The KTX stops at both Dongdaegu and Seodaegu stations, KTO's 2024 guide says, and DaeguTour describes the Dongdaegu Station Complex Transfer Center as a one-stop transfer between the KTX, the metro, and express and intercity buses. Gyeongju is about 20 minutes away by KTX (Gyeongju City; KTO, 2025), and Palgongsan, Korea's 23rd national park, is a city bus ride, with one change, from the station, so a night in Daegu opens up more than the city itself.

The two bases compared

Our rule: stay in the old downtown around Dongseongno for a first visit, the markets and the alleys; stay by Dongdaegu Station for early or late trains, a flight, Palgongsan or a day in Gyeongju.

Dongseongno and the old downtown is the stay for Daegu itself. KTO's 6.62 km downtown course runs from Seomun Market and its night market through Kim Kwangseok-gil and Dongseong-ro to February 28th Jungang Memorial Park, and its 1.32 km alley course starts at Cheongna Hill and ends by the Yangnyeongsi herbal market. Three metro stations cover it: Jungangno on Line 1 and Banwoldang, the Line 1 and Line 2 transfer, both linked by KTO to Dongseong-ro, and Seomun Market on Line 3. DaeguTour lists the Dongseongro Festival in April and May and the Powerful Daegu Festival on Dongseong-ro in July. The trade-off is the mountain: Palgongsan is a bus ride away.

Dongdaegu Station is the stay for moving on. The transfer centre at 149 Dongbu-ro, Dong-gu, puts the KTX, metro Line 1, and the express and intercity buses in one place, by DaeguTour's description. The Incheon Airport limousine ends at Dongdaegu Terminal, Daegu International Airport is about 15 minutes away by bus 101 or 401, and bus 101-1, with a change to Palgong 1, runs from the station to Donghwasa Entrance. Treat it as a base rather than a sightseeing district: the markets and alleys are a metro ride away.

Metro Line 1 joins the two: DaeguTour's map puts Dongdaegu, Jungangno and Banwoldang on the same line. For two nights, spend the first downtown on a Friday or Saturday for the night market, and the second at Dongdaegu before Palgongsan or an early train.

  • Dongseongno & the Old Downtown: Seomun Market and its weekend night market, the modern-history alleys, Yangnyeongsi and Dongseong-ro; Jungangno, Banwoldang and Seomun Market stations.
  • Dongdaegu Station: KTX, metro Line 1 and express and intercity buses in one transfer centre; the airport about 15 minutes by bus 101 or 401; buses to Donghwasa for Palgongsan.

Getting to Daegu

From Seoul, take the KTX from Seoul Station to Dongdaegu. DaeguTour gives 1 hour 40 minutes, and KTO's Daegu guide, last updated in November 2023, gives about the same. KTO's Korean course page, updated in January 2025, lists 77 KTX runs a day between Seoul and Dongdaegu, from 05:10 to 23:00, taking about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes; the spread comes from train to train, so book the fastest service when time matters. DaeguTour also lists Saemaeul and Mugunghwa services at Dongdaegu, and KTO's 2024 guide notes that the KTX stops at Seodaegu as well.

By road, KTO's 2023 guide gives about 3 hours 40 minutes by express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Seodaegu Express Bus Terminal. KTO's bus guide, updated in June 2026, lists Daegu among the routes from both Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Dong Seoul Terminal, and points travellers heading for Daegu to Seoul Express Bus Terminal.

From Incheon Airport, KTO's 2023 guide gives two routes: the airport limousine to Dongdaegu Terminal in about 4 hours, or AREX to Seoul Station, about an hour, and then the KTX to Dongdaegu, about 1 hour 40 minutes. KTO's airport page, updated in May 2026, puts the AREX express at 43 to 51 minutes to Seoul Station and all-stop trains at 59 to 66 minutes.

Daegu International Airport is in the city itself, at 221 Gonghang-ro in Dong-gu, DaeguTour says, with three boarding bridges. KTO's 2023 guide lists direct international flights, and KTO puts Dongdaegu Station about 15 minutes from the airport by city bus 101 or 401. For Palgongsan, Dong-gu Office lists Express 1 and Palgong 1 from the airport to Donghwasa Entrance.

  • Seoul Station to Dongdaegu by KTX: about 1 hour 40 minutes on the fastest trains (DaeguTour; KTO, 2023); 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes across 77 trains a day (KTO, 2025).
  • Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Seodaegu Express Bus Terminal: about 3 hours 40 minutes (KTO, 2023).
  • Incheon Airport to Dongdaegu: about 4 hours by limousine, or AREX and KTX (KTO, 2023).
  • Daegu International Airport to Dongdaegu Station: about 15 minutes by bus 101 or 401 (KTO).

Getting around: three metro lines and a city tour

DaeguTour's metro page lists three lines. Line 1 runs from Daegok to Ansim and calls at Dongdaegu, Daegu Station and Jungangno; Line 2 runs from Munyang to Yeungnam Univ.; and Line 3, a monorail and one of DaeguTour's 30 attractions in its own right, runs from Chilgok Kyungpook National Univ. Hospital to Yongji. Banwoldang is the transfer between Lines 1 and 2, and Sinnam the transfer between Lines 2 and 3, which puts Seomun Market Station two changes from Dongdaegu.

Daegu Station, on Line 1, is another of the city's railway stations: DaeguTour lists Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains on the Gyeongbu Line towards Seoul and Busan, with 252 trains a day, and KTO places Dongseong-ro near it. Dong-gu Office lists bus 101-1 from Daegu Station with a change to Palgong 1 or Express 1 for Donghwasa Entrance, so the downtown has its own route to the mountain.

For a first look, the Daegu City Tour's double-decker bus shows the attractions of Daegu at a glance, in DaeguTour's words, on a Regular Course, a Theme Course and a Palgongsan Mountain Course, which runs daily except Monday. Booking is on the City Tour site.

The modern-history alleys of Jung-gu

KTO's course 'Experience Korea's modern history and culture along the alley' is about 1.32 km long and all in Jung-gu, and it is reason enough to sleep downtown. It starts at Dongsan Cheongna Hill, where, KTO says, the modern culture alley begins; KTO's architecture web book explains that the houses on the hill were covered in ivy in summer, which gave the hill its name. From there the course takes the March 1st Independence Movement Road, the 90 stairs that remember the March First Independence Movement. KTO's 2025 Korean course page notes that the stairs are hard going for wheelchairs.

Gyesan Cathedral is on the course too. KTO's Korean page tells its story: built in 1899 as a hanok church, burned, and rebuilt in 1902 to Father Robert's design. KTO's English page, from August 2026, describes a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles on a Latin-cross plan, with French-made stained glass and the remains of Korean Catholic martyrs. It is about 700 m from exit 14 of Banwoldang Station, KTO says. Also on the course is the house of Yi Sang-hwa, where the poet lived from 1939 until his death in 1943.

The course also passes Daegu Jeil Church, a Gothic building designated a cultural property; Gyonam YMCA, which KTO calls the base of the national and independent movements; and the Daegu Korean Chinese Association, a modern, Western-style building in red brick. It ends by Yangnyeongsi, at the Daegu Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine. The Korean Medicine Experience Town, at 45 Jungang-daero 77-gil, is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:30, and closed on Mondays (KTO, 2025).

Walk it in the morning, then take KTO's longer 6.62 km downtown course in the afternoon: Kim Kwangseok-gil's mural wall near Bangcheon Market, Dongseong-ro and February 28th Jungang Memorial Park, which in KTO's words commemorates the meaning of modern Korean history. KTO's tip for lunch is the Dongin-dong jjimgalbi alley of braised beef short ribs. Finish at Seomun Night Market if it is a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Palgongsan National Park and Donghwasa

Palgongsan became Korea's 23rd national park in December 2023, the Korea National Park Service records, covering 126.058 km². Its temples include Donghwasa, and Gwanbong (Gatbawi), the park service says, draws people from across the country to pray; Gatbawi Rock is one of DaeguTour's 30 attractions of Daegu.

Donghwasa, south of Palgongsan, is the most popular Buddhist temple in the Daegu region in KTO's 2024 words, with about 1,500 years of history, and KTO lists it as open all year. KTO's Daegu course singles out its world-class stone statue of the Yaksa Buddha. From the Donghwasa ticket booth, Dong-gu Office describes a hiking route into Yeombulam Valley, named for Yeombulam, the highest hermitage on the mountain.

The Palgongsan Cable Car runs 1.2 km, about 7 minutes one way, to an upper platform on Sinnimbong Peak, 820 m on KTO's course. KTO lists it as open all year, on hours set month by month.

Getting there is a city bus. Dong-gu Office lists bus 101-1 from Dongdaegu Station with a change to Palgong 1, bus 101-1 from Daegu Station with a change to Palgong 1 or Express 1, and Express 1 or Palgong 1 direct from Daegu International Airport, all to Donghwasa Entrance. The Daegu City Tour's Palgongsan Mountain Course runs every day except Monday. Stay at Dongdaegu for a mountain day, and come in April for the Palgong Mountain Cherry Blossom Festival, which DaeguTour lists at the fountain square in the Donghwa area.

Festivals: what ran in 2026, and Daegu's year

Two of Daegu's festivals have already run in 2026. The Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herbal Medicine Culture Festival ran from 7 to 10 May 2026 on the herbal street in Jung-gu, and the Daegu Chimac Festival ran from 1 to 5 July 2026 around Duryu Park in Dalseo-gu, as KTO's festival pages record. Their 2027 dates had not been published at the end of October 2026.

DaeguTour's festival list gives the months, without years. Book a downtown stay early for the spring and summer festivals on Dongseong-ro, and a Dongdaegu stay for cherry blossom season on Palgongsan:

  • April: the Palgong Mountain Cherry Blossom Festival in the Donghwa area, and the Biseul Mountain Azalea Festival.
  • April to May: the Dongseongro Festival.
  • April to October: the Revival of Gyeongsang Gamyeong Customs, at Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park in Jung-gu.
  • June to July: the Daegu International Musical Festival, at theatres around Daegu and Dongseongno.
  • July: the Powerful Daegu Festival on Dongseong-ro, and the Chimac Festival (1 to 5 July in 2026).
  • Autumn: the Kim Kwang-seok Singing Contest, which KTO's Kim Kwangseok-gil page lists each autumn.

Onward to Gyeongju and Andong

Gyeongju is the obvious next stop. Gyeongju City and KTO's 2025 guide put Gyeongju about 20 minutes from Dongdaegu by KTX, and KTO's guide routes flyers the same way: bus from Daegu International Airport to Dongdaegu, about 15 minutes, then the KTX. DaeguTour also lists Gyeongju among the main routes of the Seobu (Western) Intercity Bus Terminal, at 496 Wolbae-ro, Nam-gu.

For Andong, KTO's 2026 Andong guide gives about 1 hour 20 minutes from Daegu by Mugunghwa train or intercity bus, and its May 2026 airport guide puts Andong Bus Terminal about 90 minutes from Dongdaegu by intercity bus. Dongdaegu Station is the base for both; see our Gyeongju and Andong guides for where to stay when you arrive.
